Aircraft designing and production competition

Welcome to the ADPC.(Aircraft designing and production competition). Your goal is to make a replica of the planes that I specify in the shortest amount of time. The quicker you make it, the more points you get(judged by the hour). Keeping part count low adds more points too!

Rules:

Pictures are required every 20 minutes during building for verification.(the bar that tells you your part count/weight/ etc. must be visible. (Or a video)

A download link is required.

Points system:

To find points for part count:

Multiply the part count by 2.(lower numbers are better)

Example:

30 parts X 2 = 60 points.

To find points for the amount of time:

Multiply the amount of hours it took you to make it by 3*.

Example:

2 hours equals 6 points.

Also I will put your aircraft in one of four categories...*

Terrible(+10 points)

Poor(+1 points

Good(-4 points)

Acceptable(-11 points)

...depending on how real-life-looking it looks.

Person with Lowest points wins!

Points are added up at the end of each week.*

Here are this weeks planes: ( the "-" is the points you lose for making that airplane) The less points the better!

747-400(-3)

A330-200(-2)

787-10(-9)

767-400ER(-1)

737-300(-4)

AN-124(-7)

C5 Galaxy(-1)

A380-800(-14)

 Negative numbers are better!

All mods except B9 are allowed(unless a make an exception).

B9 PROCEDURE PARTS NOT ALLOWED FOR USE ON WINGS!

LeaderBoard:

1. @hoioh

2. @Cunjo Carl

3.____________________

*Lower points is always better.

I'm a huge fan of real time challenges! A timed challenge for building ships for aesthetics is quite novel. It totally reminds me of @hazard-ish's speed builds!

I happen to be terrible at making things look good, but I'll definitely give this a shot. I'll be doing the 767-400ER in stock+MakingHistory, likely with results in a few days.

That's why you get so many points making them.

That was for the Kerbal Express Airlines challenge. It was to demonstrate my point of not being able to large plane. I wanna try a C-5 though. If you look at the name tag in the second pic you can see that it's the KrakenTech Monstrosity MX-9001 II

Fhew! That was intense. It took me something like 3:35 to scrap this thing together. Unfortunately, it looks like most of my video... didn't save somehow? I'm not going to rule out user error :) . Unfortunately, my primary system is kaput, so I'm using and alternative, that doesn't have any of my normal recording software on it. I have lots of craft saves from during development though, so I should be able to recreate a progression montage. I'll go for that and post the craft file tomorrow, but I have to admit, I'm excited to at least post one screen cap for now!

I wish I could give it a paint job, but I'm happy with the how the silhouette turned out.

I've built you a Boeing 787-10 dreamliner in 2 hours: https://imgur.com/a/U2PSqLK

khPbGYk.jpg

I ran into 1 problem, I can't make a landing gear low enough... The only mod I could find that allows me to make wheels big enough and low enough is for KSP 1.0.5 and those wheels locked up on the runway so I couldn't take off without severe drifting along the runway making take-off pretty much impossible. She flies pretty well, even with full tanks and flies great when almost empty!

I used 67 of the finest parts to create this beauty, some of which require mods. You can download the craft from my library on Kerbal-X in my signature, or via this direct link: https://kerbalx.com/hoioh/boeing-787-10-dreamliner

767 400ER Craft Link

99 Parts!   --  198 points

Time: 3:35  --  11 points

Some notes from making it: I'm surprised how small the engines were in real life compared to the Goliath in KSP. They also have a very surprising shape which took a while to emulate. Also, the tailfin in real life is HUGE!

                            eHUBSor.jpg

                            rD6WEsl.jpg

dKvQeUn.jpg

Here we are, it took a while to do post processing and upload on all these photos. For the in-progress shots, there's a small gap in there where I both didn't have video and craft saves. Take my word that I spent it scooting wing segments around very slowly :) .

Spoiler

nrqzQjh.jpg

30min:  The craft all needed to be scaled to the mk3 fuselage, which is the only one to have nice looking windows at this size. I putzed around for a half hour to get the rough aspect ratios right. Very important... those aspect ratios :D . I used to do costume making and alterations, and I learned from a friend that if you don't have the time or skills to make something properly, the most important things to focus on are the silhouette and the shapes of the colors. KSP of course won't do colors, but if I could I'd go with the same color as my reference plane - Hot Pink!

RgSlaLN.jpg

RcGZ1np.jpg

60min: I spent a goodly amount of time trying to get the wings right. Was it an hour? I was surprised how hard it was to balance the lift given how far back the wings were placed. This probably tells us something interesting about weight distribution in real planes, but... I don't know what it is! I remedied the problem with a dozen or so pre-tilted wing segments hidden in the front of the plane. I also had a hard time with the airbrakes, which refused to deploy in a consistent direction. I also put in a bit more effort on a draft for the engine

ZxrD1yR.jpg

120min: Next up was the tail fin, which was a surprising challenge. I must have spent a while on it, too!

150min: I remember putting quite a bit of time into trying to get the air brakes to deploy in a consistent direction. KSP really liked to make them deploy randomly, which I found frustrating. In the end, I had to settle for well enough and move on. They're bound to the brake action, and do the job! At this point, my video had silently stopped, and I don't have any remaining craft saves, unfortunately. Take my word though, not much happened :D

Zk3teqf.jpg

180: Finally were the engines. The Goliaths were way too big, so I took some time to design a smaller analogue. Not sure how well they turned out, but figured I'd stick with them. I think my favorite windfall from the exercise is that toggling engine modes on this 767 makes it spout fire.

210: After that, I spent 30 minutes cleaning up the design and making sure it was flyable. I even added in a little vernier thruster to the tail section so the plane could have its 'generator' on when landed! I'm assuming the 767 has a tail exhaust for its generator atleast? Well, this one does :) . It toggles with action group 2.

That was fun. Thanks for the challenge, @dundun93!

I can't make a landing gear low enoug

That's ok. I'll still take it.

Here are the current results:

At 209 points @Cunjo Carl made a Very realistic replica I will subtract 11 points for an excellent design! Very realistic!

209 - 11 = 198 points! Good job!

@hoioh came very low with 129 points. I would recommend he put the b9 Dreamliner engines on it though.

 Summary:

@Cunjo Carl did well, but needs to make an airplane with lower part count by the end of this week or he might not win.(but that's ok)

@hoioh used airplane plus parts giving him less part count. Which is why he has the advantage.

Also kept making more airplanes! Don't think about the fact that you will have higher points. Just make as many as you can.

You add 40 points per aircraft you don't build(that's why it's good to make as many as you can).

I didn't have B9 installed at the time, but I do now! I'll check them out and see if they work well with the weight of the plane as well

That and a bit of Tweakscale, yeah, but I think you're too hard on the part count because that could inspire people to make silly looking things and call them whatever getting the ultimate low score. You would obviously disqualify such and entry, but still.

The following plane is theoretically worth -2 points:

NOZaycE.jpg

Calculated like this:

1 part x2 = 2 pts
Took me all of 5 seconds to build, so 0 pts for time
It looks terrible, so +10 pts
I'm claiming it's an A380-800 so -14 pts

2+10-14 = -2 pts

It's not fun and totally against the spirit of the competition, but hey! It scores low!

For my Dreamliner, I added a bunch of parts to the lower hull in order to get that bulging shape that the original plane has, but if I remove it I will loose 20 parts and thus 40 points on my score. It will look a little less good, but in the absolute worst case that will cost me just 21 points giving my plane a 19 point advantage while looking less like the original. And there's more I could remove to reduce part count (which is what I did for the KEA challenge version, where it doesn't matter much if it looks realistic or not).

So I would recommend giving a LOT more points for looks and/or reducing the influence of part count on the final score.

I checked the B9 engines, but I'm not so sure they look better: (these are the CFM56 engines, the only ones I could find that you might have meant, unless we're not running the same mods. Maybe you can look it up and send a download link?)

6y4HwNw.jpg

And they perform way worse than the scaled Goliaths in all respects but fuel economy:

@Cunjo Carl please just don't enter one airplane.

Sorry, much to my dismay I'm not going to be able to do any more speedy rocket building for a while. Wish that I could, but because of an unusual sickness, I'm only able to handle the focus during some weeks but not others. Right now, even getting to Mun is a stretch! Well, these things happen. Best of luck with the continuing challenge, and I'll try to roll back in when I'm able.

Wha?

Anyone else wanna enter?

@hoioh, how is the a380 going?
