Rendezvous & Docking on Xbox One

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow Kerbonauts, my name is Nick and I've been recently delving into deep space in KSP. However, I am having issues with fuel running out / too much mass. So I thought let's build a space station or assemble a larger spacecraft by launching several pieces one by one. I can kind of rendezvous but when I do I don't know what I am doing when it comes to the RCS controls or properly using the docking ports. I'm pretty new to the VAB too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Again I'm on Xbox one.

The main way to use RCS controls on consoles is through "Docking Mode". There are several ways of activating Docking mode, but they depend on which preset you are using, which you didn't specify. So I'll assume that you know how to get into Docking Mode. The most important part of Docking Mode is when you switch the controls into Linear mode. That means that your RCS will push you sideways, instead of making your ship rotate.

There are many tutorials (video based) here and on youtube about how to use Docking Mode. Have you looked at any of them? That's the best place to learn for console players. Try searching for "Rendezvous Tutorial". ;)

Similarly for Rendezvous and Docking. Watch lots of video tutorials. Once you get the basic idea of going into Target mode on your Navball, and what "burning retrograde" and "pushing the prograde marker on top of the target marker" means when you are in Target mode -- then it's just a matter of practice.

Thank you for your advice. I guess I'll just get back on the grind of watching and trying until I can get a feel for it. Have a good one

Tom, try reading through this thread:

Yes, there are some references to mods, which are not available to you, but there is also a lot of good tips for stock players.

Basically, crash into the target docking port with you same size docking port at 0.2 m/s.

There is a bunch of stuff about rendezvous, such as setting your target, plotting intercept course with manouver nodes, killing relative velocity when you are close, then kill relative distance to 100m to not crash into solar panels.

For docking, set docking port on target craft as target and set docking port on your craft as control from here, then use rcs to slowly move towards target. Make sure you touch with the ports parallel to each other. Magnets will pull you in when you are extremely close, but try not to go too fast due to the magnets.

For control keys, view your settings. I play on pc.
