What are these aircraft?!

What are these aircraft. I assume they are some sort of helicopter, but they look like a bunch of balled up transformers. Any idea? Or was this done for the shooting of bumblebee or something?

They look like a mix of MH-60R & MH-60S to me, but could be some HH-60H or SH-60F depending on how old the photo is. The US Navy doesn't normally operate CH-53E off carrier decks. Not that it never happens, but CH-53 is normally based off amphibious ships and not CVNs.

I was seeing the bulge on the side, I forgot the extra tanks on many of the Seahawks.

I saw the bulge too, but it didn't look big enough to me to be a CH-53. The one to the right rear of the main group and the one by itself near the deck edge look like they have the sliding door of the MH-60S instead of the stores pylon of the MH-60R.

Yeah, and all the non E-2 aircraft are FA-18s, so it's a new(ish) image.

More than that, they are FA-18 E/F's, Super Hornets.

And Google reverse image search is your friend!

Its the USS Ronald Raegan, visiting Busan, south Korea, in October 2016

USS Ronald Reagan hosts Carrier Air Wing 5, which sports MH-60S's and MH-60R's

Here's a close up of a section of the deck from a different picture but same trip:

Ooh look, you can see an EA18G Growler there in the top right too! Very new, in service 2008.

Lets feel old together.

When I was a kid (lets say 1995), the spitfire was an old plane from 50 years ago.

You knwo what is an old plane from 50 years ago now?

F-14 Tomcat - first flight 1970, 48 years ago

A10 Warthog - first flight 1972, 46 years ago

F15 Eagle - first flight 1972, 46

B52 Bomber - first flight 1952, 66 years ago!!

For us Brits - RAF Tornado, first flight 1972, 46yo

The F14 is not just an old plane to todays kids, its an old fashioned plane.

And a B52 is as old to them as Baron Von Richtofen's fabric-and-wire Triplane was to me.

Thats....thats....ouch.

It just looks weird, seeing one basic aircraft type on deck.

I remember seeing the local ANG unit flying F-4s.  Now, they've transitioned to drones.

It's not weird... It's reckless. What happens if you have to ground the Super Hornet fleet?

Yes, I know that it's supposed to simplify logistics... But gimme a CVW with a mix of Tomcats, Vikings, and Intruders any day.

Modern warfighting trumps (pardon my language) nostalgia any day of the week. Theres huge advantages to a common, multirole type, not just sharing spare parts either. You can field a larger strike group, have much greater availability of aircraft, losses are more easily absorbed etc.

Technically they are. Every plane on a carrier is usually a transformer. 8)

Unless that is what you meant.

Some even did too much:

I love the A-3 too:

(Funny picture, as the beast is surrounded by one of the few models which didn't have any folding wings)
