Ground scatter doesn't generate while flying

It seems like the last few versions I've had a problem where some ground scatter (trees) don't generate beneath me while flying. 

Some trees exist when starting, but just in the hills to the east of the KSC and not extending very far.

If I land, go back to space center, then return to the ship it is surrounded with trees (as expected).

Landed a few km east of the KSC.

Same plane, same place, after returning to the Space Center, then returning via the Tracking Station

 

 

Weirdly, the small grass ground scatter shows up even when trees do not. To be clear is is happening without mods, but it also happens when Kopernicus is installed.

Are other people seeing this behavior in Stock?

If you aren't using any mods that would impact that, I would say it is most likely a stock bug that needs to be reported.

Would probably be good to confirm if others have the problem as well though.  Sorry, I can't say for certain if I've seen that issue -- I normally play with scatters disabled.

@Shadowmage, I noticed this at first while trying to use Kopernicus to add better looking scatter models, but it happens to me in a fresh installation of the game. I haven't checked the bug reports to see if there is anything like this.

Has anyone else tried to replicate this? It should be very easy to verify. I'm curious if this is a general issue or only affects me.

I have never really understood what the scatter generation depends on. Seems like the switch in the options is just a hint, not a command :-)

Linux, last used version 1.4.5, few mods (KW, waypoint man, station parts, alarm clock, transfer calc, scansat, engineer, realplume, precise node, buffalo rover, near future solar).
