Have indications of CoT/CoM/CoL per stage

Recommended Posts

Now that we have the Delta-V indicators in the stock game that tell us how far we can fly with our engines in each stage, maybe it would be a handy tool to have an indication of center of thrust and center of mass per individual stage.

Especially when designing craft that have lopsided loads (e.g. shuttles) the current indication in the editor falls a bit short.

Well, for stacked rockets, you can just grab the lower stages and set them aside.  Make your tweaks, and reassemble.

I'm not a good enough shuttle builder to get into the finer details of the argument, but the single COM indicator works ok for me, you just have to line up your CoT to go through it.  And I use smaller engines for orbital maneuvering anyways, so I line those CoT/COM and then add the tanks and line up the main engines.    But also your CoM shifts a lot with a shuttle, so you need to account for that too, which we can already do just be emptying fuel tanks.

My biggest concern with this is the complexity.  I know mods have had issues telling the difference between stages on some complex designs.  So with a CoM specific to a stage, in a fully built complex rocket, I can see some simple math errors really compounding an issue that might be near impossible to diagnose.

Plus, I really don't see a need for this.  You usually build your rocket by stage.  Once a stage is completed, you move onto the next stage.  I don't see the need to have an indicator specific to a stage I'm already done with.
