The Sharing of the KSP game

Well, whatever happens, everyone here can rest easy knowing the people mooching off of your "friend" can't update the game from 0.16 to 0.17 unless they either purchase it themselves or the "friend" thinks it's a good use of his time to update it for them all individually every single time a new update comes out. Once 0.17 comes out, I'd make a good bet that those people who got the game for free will be willing to purchase a license and update the game themselves so that they can play with the NEW PLANETS.

Really, the game is so good that the updates alone are enough to convince people to support it. How do I know this? When 0.14 came out and brought persistence, I got so excited I immediately abandoned the now-demo and bought the game on the spot. I don't know what it is about this game that makes people so excited for updates. I wasn't even this excited for Minecraft Beta 1.8.

In all honesty, Squad's DRM for KSP is the sheer quality and fun factor of the game itself. The game is so fun that people would rather buy it than pirate it. That's how all games should be. Don't make a dull game and pile on loads of restrictive, buggy DRM (Spore, I'm looking dead at you. You could have been so great, there was so much potential...). All you need to do is make a really fun game and only authorize for automatic updates. It's relatively easier and more efficient than wasting time and resources developing software to tack onto your main software that only hurts customers.

That reminds me, how would people who bought KSP before it was on Steam get it on Steam? Would we all receive a code for a free version of KSP so we can add it?

Squad could set up an automated system to send their customers randomly generated KSP Steam keys through email. The user would then enter that key into Steam and unlock the game in there.

Or add a feature to the store where people who have bought the game can login to the KSP store and press a button to display their game code to enter into Steam. That way the code stays with the KSP account in case something happens to the steam account and it needs to be re-entered.

Ah, this is ridiculous... It's an indie game, if this guys don't get profit from KSP development they simply will be forced to end this project and find another one. This isn't charity organization.

If someone want to see KSP growing up, with (maybe) all stuff you dreaming of - buy the copy or even donate more... money is like blood for project like that, very green one :P.

EDIT_1: Steam don't made buying KSP easier, only add more people to split money from game income, so what is the point in it ?

EDIT_2: But being able to acquire multiple KSP copies and giving them, to other user within KSP store could be nice.

Anyway, if you don't had own account/PP - look around, maybe an friend/family member with pay-pal could help you, give him your money and he could buy you KSP in exchange).

I agree one the previous statements about security. The multibillion dollar companies invest how much in their security and it is cracked before the game is even officially released. With KSP, and minecraft etc, their setup is nice because I can put the game onto a flash drive. When I visit friends or family, is fun to take the flash drive and let them try. No different than if I brought a console game over etc. If they want the full version or updates, then they buy it. Got a few people I know into it this way, plus is just fun to be at a friends house and take turns building stages onto a rocket to try and get it working! The current log in for updating is really the best security is going to be.

Being mean to them won't make them buy a legit copy, you know.

Pressure them to buy it and support the game, sure, cut them off from updates, yes, but don't unfriend them or punch them or whatever. There's no gain in that.

When I bought the game, I tought I can use the store account to login to the forum. If the two accounts could be connected together, it would be possible to allow only people who bought the game to enter certain subforums like "Development and Support" or "Addon Making". At least the game developers and the moderation wouldn't need to waste their time helping people who didn't bought the game in this subforums.

[...] or even donate more...

I already asked that, but again: Is it possible to select the amount of money to donate or do I simply have to re-buy it multiple times?

when my finances improve abit im deffinitly buying more copies, i may give them away on a youtube contest, or at a local gamestop i frequent, i want to donate both with my cash, and with a playerbase. thsi game is truely one of the best ones i have, better then alot of AAA titles.

as far as DRM is concerned, im glad SQUAD has taken a stance against it, it truely is a terribly flawed design, it will never work, its about as effective as locking your door to stop a burgler. it wont keep anyone who really wants to get in from doing so, its only going to stop the people who knock anyways. and i cant tell you how many games i returned same day just because it had stupidly complicated DRM. SPORE for example, ive never played, i had it, discovered the mess of a DRM it had, and it went back, its a thing on principle.

This has been discussed time and time again and most people disagree with you. Steam adds a huge customer base that justifies the profit split. Steam also WOULD make buying KSP easier as it adds many payment options that are not available on KSP at the moment. It would also be a huge advertisement for the game.

Steam controls more than 70% of worldwide digital game sales. (according to forbes). Many of those people ONLY buy games through steam these days.

So even though steam will eat 30-40% of the profit per cop sold it comes with a HUGE customer base. The game landing on the front page and or new games section would equate to easily double the number of copies sold to date.

Good, if it went DRM, then i have lost my entertainment on the train to college. i Downloaded KSP on my PC and laptop.... Thats ok though isnt it? because I own box devices?

As far as I'm concerned, you know whether its OK or not. You bought the game, you can use it for yourself however you want, even if its on different computers, same as you can if you say buy any game on steam. I personally have KSP installed on my laptop for when I want to slack off at work, and on my desktop at home. However, if you start feeling guilty about it, squad certainly won't mind if you buy an additional copy :)

There are still ways to annoy pirates even without drm, for example the Paradox approach:

Bind the game key to a Forum Account (or vice versa) and make the addon forum section only available to people who bought the game. Of course someone with a pirated copy will still be able to get addons through third party sites. But with paradox games this works quite well (you are almost unable to find mods at other sites via google etc.).

I think it would need to tweak the forum, which wouldn't be that easy.

But as long as we continue to treat piracy as if it is a technological problem and not a social one, I fear software companies are going to continue to waste piles of money on protection schemes that are cracked in a very short time and only serve to drive up the price of their final product.

I have never thought of it like that but i see it now.

The problems i have with DRM is on Settlers 7, I knwo if it didnt have this always on internet thing i would of got all the DLC for it. I used to travel a fair bit on trains ect and there was nothing i would of loved to do t kill time was play that But noooooo.

I would try the cracks for it, but am worried steam will some how know i have them and ban my account.

I love and adore KSP am glad i found out about it (youtuber robazz) even with all the hype over curiosity i still think i would of missed this gem of a game and the cult of Jeb till it sprung up on steam one day. When it dose come on steam i will buy it again as i feel i pay for beta/alpha then again for its full version. Did the same for Minecraft and will be also for dayz when thats on its own stand alone game.

Snipped out what I liked about your post. I have never really thought about it, but I must agree. This makes so much sense and I for one am really happy with the no DRM; just makes gaming easier.
