Klaw won't grab asteroid?

Recommended Posts

Got another headscratcher here for y'all...

Recently managed to wrangle a ~100-tonne Class C asteroid into a stable, circular orbit over Kerbin. It's ringing up at 93% resources, so of course I'm going to try to turn this thing into a fuel depot, as that's something completely new for me.

Habitat and ISRU package, attached to and floating near Thaadeus II...

did manage to attach the habitat module to the rock without issue, and it's now providing guidance and crew space, but when I tried to grapple the drill/ore tank/ISRU unit... it just bounced off the asteroid. I tried to grapple at multiple locations and speeds, ranging from just barely moving to 0.3 m/s. No luck, it just strikes the collider mesh and slides along that.

Is it no longer possible to attach more than one Klaw to an asteroid, or have I missed something important?

Nah, the important thing with the klaw is your impact angle. Speed doesn't matter. You have to be very close to 90 degrees to the surface for it to grab.

And there is nothing that prevents multiple grabs on the same asteroid, so that's not the problem.

You might have a problem with those drills, though. It looks to me like they don't have enough room to extend fully.

Yep, hit it at a different spot and it locked up immediately. No issues with the drills, either: filled a 2.5m ore tank in a couple of minutes.

Thanks for the advice! Consider this one closed.
