Copying subassemblies between saves?

Instead of remaking all of my satellites I'd saved as subassemblies last career, I figured I'd just copy them from one subassembly folder to the other. It works for ships so no reason it wouldn't work for subassemblies.

Except it doesn't. They don't show up in the game. Anybody happen to know why and how to make it work?

I found a workaround, put them in the VAB filer and then plop them in as subassemblies in the game. However I'd still like to know.

 

EDIT:

I think I figured it out. I'd not unlocked a part they all had and apparently that hides them. Interesting.
