When I switch to Sentinel telescope it spins itself to pieces. Please help!

Recommended Posts

It took a lot of work (and funds) to finally be able to get a Sentinel Telescope into space.  I have it placed nicely and decided I would check in on it, and when I do it starts spinning and rips itself apart.  I have a savegame I can load to before this happens.  How can I stop it from occurring and what exactly is causing this?

In a lot of cases, I'd suggest to reset trim with Alt+X, but it appears that your telescope begins to spin slowly and then accelerates to death.  That's usually caused by phantom forces introduced by part clipping.  However, if you were able to get it into position over several play sessions or otherwise after switching to something else, then it may be a random-but-temporary issue that you can resolve by quitting and reloading.

Should that not work, then as a temporary solution, when you switch to the telescope, use 5x timewarp.  That will stop the spin and give you a chance to access the part action window.  You'll need to go back to normal time to do anything such as activate the telescope, but you'll be able to do that and switch back to the KSC without destroying your telescope.

Will give it a try.  BTW it doesn't wind up slowly.  It is OK for a brief second then suddenly spins wildly.  Also - quitting and reloading did not solve the issue unfortunately.

Can you show a pic in mid destruction?

Yes I'll do that.

Here is just before it rips itself apart:

I'm not sure I can get it right after it rips itself apart.  It happens so fast.

Hmm, I’ve had something like this before. Maybe someone else knows better than me but I think it might have something to do with the method of placement of the solar panels.

Yeah, those panels do look like they could be clipping.

One other thing I noticed in the screenshot is the use of a fairing with a structural truss.  I’ve seen some weird effects with parts mounted inside the fairing truss.  I’m usually cautious with clipping in a truss fairing, especially if I’m going to be decoupling.

Also, in the screenshot it looks like SAS is on, and is applying force to the vessel. Not sure if it’s trying to counteract the rotation, or is causing it.  If you can shut off SAS before parts start coming off, that might be worth a try.

This looks like an autostrut problem or the lack of it.(Options Advanced Tweakables, preferably use only grandparent).

Does it have Heavy or Root autostruts? They tend to call the kraken.

Also with Alt+f12 you can cheat/rendervouz with the telescope so you dont have to do all the work again to put it there.

Are you on Solar Orbit? This post has some more info on this and also some weirdness in solar orbits:

Not sure if this is still a thing, but it sounds like an ancient evil known as the Gryo Kraken, which can indeed be awakened by clipping parts into each other:

Gyro Kraken is when a spacecraft will spin around and vibrate so intensely that the spacecraft will be obliterated. The rate of spinning is so extreme that it is impossible to be replicated manually. This is actually a bug with parts clipping through each other and colliding with each other, causing what is also known as 'ghost forces'. On occasion, it will appear as though something is hitting your craft at high speeds rather than just spinning out of control.
