Ride, Sally Ride

Don't know if this has been brought up and I missed it, but...

In light of Neil Armstrong's recent and tragic death, and his memorials being added to the game, I have to wonder the following:

Though she wasn't responsible for any major groundbreaking firsts, nor was she as great a hero, Sally Ride was always one of my personal top heroes. I would dearly love to see a Sally "Ride" Kerbal character added to the game. Who else is with me?

Sally Ride captured imaginations around the world, and was a hero to me as a kid. I second the motion, and to go a step further I'd like to see "special" Kerbals. Alan Kerbal, Gus Kerbal, Sally Kerbal, Christa Kerbal, etc etc. Only like a 10% chance to spawn a special Kerbal each flight.

IMO I don't want to see this game become a memorial fest. Neil Armstong's memorial is good, but too many more would just be overkill.

why not make big one of those black boxes on a planet and write every man and women who has gone to space there

Maybe make memorials on the floor of Laythe's ocean, as a double-layered funeral at "sea."

Well, I should have clarified... no memorial idea in my suggestion, I'd like to see living astronauts in the rotation too

Agree. I would rather see the Neil Armstrong memorial as a special case, rather than setting a precedent.

You could always just have something like this. From Kennedy Space Center (sorry, my video camera doesn't take that fantastic of stills). Though I think that too many memorials will be over the top.

And then we'll have arguments on the asteroids: "Ugh, Gagarin is smaller than Ride! The game is biased!"

Joking aside, that's probably the best way to include the "big names" in space travel; I'd rather land and walk on Armstrong than see his memorial on the Mun.

And depending on the size of the list (which should be big already), some sci-fi writers like Asimov, Clarke or even Adams would/could complete the set nicely.

I agree. Also, in this case I don't see Ride as particularly notable either. Surely Tereshkova is more appropriate. But then this forum is so jingoistic i'm not sure if anyone is aware the Russians had a space program.

Oggula, the many Russian members of the KSP forums are well aware of the Soviet space program, as are a great many of the American and European members.

I like the asteroid belt idea too.

But above all, I respect that while I'm a happy player of alpha KSP and member of the community, this isn't <em>my</em> game. Squad should be free to memorialize whomever they want however they want, and skip memorializing whomever they want, without the rest of us in the peanut gallery getting our panties in a twist.

It's just a game after all. Neil Armstrong would be pleased to see Nova's monument on the Mun (and I can't wait to visit it). But I'm also quite certain that if we were able to ask him, he's assure us that he wouldn't have been offended in the least if it were never put in the game.
