Who are all the different Kerbals in the game named after?

They are randomly generated from a list of name parts. The only two kerbals to be named after someone are Wernher von Kerman and Gene Kerman.

On a related note, how many kerbal names can be in the persistence file? Is there a maximum? also, I've learned how to change the names of existing kerbals but is there a way to feed KSP a list of names to have it auto generate kerbals for?

I believe Kurt Kerman is official, if you watched the livestream when the team was on, they said it would be added to the list of names in .17

Gene Kerman and Wernher Von Kerman don't generate as playable characters, but they serve as instructors in the tutorials!
