What is your most fuel efficient machines? to the mun / minmus and back

Capable of going to the mun (we can also discuss minmar setups) and returning safely home.

Lets share our design ideas. Vanilla parts only!

First off, I'd like to make a distinction between the lightest most fuel efficient and cheapest, which are not necessarily one in the same. We can discuss both alternatives here.

K I'll go first.

-basically a 4 stage system.

stage 2runs at the same time as stage 1, and it uses the fuel from the stage 1 stack...

once it gets to stage 2, it starts using its own fuel.

On this one, stage 3 which is one engine and two fuel tanks in the center, doesn't start up until stage 3 is reached.. so i guess, it could be slightly better if i can pass fuel from both stage 1 and 2 to the stage 3 engine, and use it's thrust at take off as well.

For the return, the landing stage 4 engines have just enough unf, to lift off minmus and set up a trajectory back home, for re-entree, and parachute.

Would love to see how you guys get it done So share your ideas!

My Universal Setup..

-Small, Cheap and Efective..

- 2800l of fuel..

- 26T

#03 - Vertical Ascent,

#02 - Orbital Turn, Orbital Speed

#01 - Circularizing, Insertion Burn, Deorbit, Landing, Ascent/Insertion, Landing..

For the lightest category, this I'd say is close to the lightest. http://imgur.com/tsST3 I use mechjeb to help me control that jet engine and those SRB's though, it's very difficult to control them by hand. It of course does not use the fuel bug. I managed it to the mun and back with a slightly lighter rocket, by taking the decoupler and fuel line away to have a lander with one and a half tanks, and adding three landing legs, but it was had a very tight delta-v budget and I found it difficult to repeat the mission.

I dont usually use RCS or ASAS, but I occasionally make and test rockets with them. Here's one I like: http://imgur.com/j3L5d It has about 7700m/s delta-v, more than enough for a Mun mission. It also has the RCS attached to the command module, so if you get into trouble you could still return home. It does not have many parts, if you take away the ladders. It is very easy to fly.

What engine have you got at the bigger fuel tank? I can't see and I really need it for my rocket!

4x TurboJet

1x Airospike

1x LV-T909

I'm assuming that you'r using the Unofficial Fuel bug patch?

P.S You just gave me a idea.. :P

Hope you don't mind iv striped some parts, added TurboJets..

Hey Kosmo-not, I tried your rocket but as soon as I got to the mun I didn't even have enough fuel to even bring it down. what am i possibly doing wrong?

actually, I had to burn 3/4 of my last stage's fuel tank just to get far enough for a gravity lock on the mun

It was a straight shot up to the moon too.

K maybe you haven't visited back here yet, but that's really starting to bug me. are you using the fuel cheat in order to make this rocket work? are you using that mechjeb thing ? maybe it puffs up some aspects of the automated flights and hence, can't get the same result with manual flight?

I had my reservations on these simple designs, and now I'm starting to question their effectiveness.

k just as I suspected, this setup doesn't even get me half way to the distance of the moon. What is going on here?

K I tried this one, and by the time I made it to the last stage, I hardly had enough altitude to get into orbit on the home planet, let alone reach the mun.

K I am definitely doing something wrong here. I think my Kermans are too fat.

LOL are you all trolling me?

You cant fly mine and Kosmo-nots ship.. Are you sure that your doing a proper gravity turn and the staging is right?

In 10 min i'll be back with screenshots.. of both ships and flight scenarios..

Here's the flight plan with images..

Any more Ridiculous Questions?

-Flying with the unofficial Fuel Bug fix..

-Throttler at 100% at all times until final landing descent..

56 Images just to be sure, you don't miss anything:

-Engage 4x TurboJet Engines

-Vertical Ascent until 8km

-HDG 90° Pitch 80°..

-Engage Airospike at ~10.5 km..

-13 km HDG 90° Pitch 65°..

-Drop Turbo jets at 17km..

-20 km Pro-Grade until Desired AP..

-Cruise Until AP..

-Circularize Until PE 15km..

-Drop Tank (Extra fuel 300-500l)..

-Circularize..

-Cruise to Munar Injection Point..

-Burn Pro-grade until ~3.2 km/s..

-Cruise to PErimun..

-Circularize..

-Mark spot, optimal fly by altitude 8-10km..

-Bunr Pro-Grade until ~200m/s..

- at 4km Slow down to 50m/s..

The problem is that you're going straight up. Once you get to the Mun, the problem there is that you're probably going straight down.

wow, thanx for the detailed explanation Atimed. Apparently I've been doing this all wrong. Will try to douplicate it and repost in shame :P

I suggest you 1st practice on your gravity turn, it saves a lot of fuel if executed properly..

The one i presented wasn't my best, i usually go around 800l of spare fuel, but i don't think straight when i'm a bit mad.. :P

My design is flexible enough for errors, but not for marginal ones.. I have a 3 man on if you'll need.. :P

Hope to see some results soon.. :D
