Docking challenge.

Recommended Posts

Was curious how fast others can complete the docking tutorial. I found it a great practice for when I ever get anything large into orbit lol.

Currently takes me 27 minutes. I made some mistakes today though so I have to try some more. Streamed the entire tutorial if interested.

Here is the hightlight of my final approach. Check out this video "Highlight: Kerbal Docking Tutorial Speedrun" http://www.twitch.tv/kinslayer125/v/575860847?sr=a&t=1s

I've never done the docking tutorial before. I've never even clicked the "Training" Main Menu entry before. So I went into this thing without any foreknowledge, other than - presumably - it would involve at least one instance of docking.

So I did it twice. Once following the tutorial (though I seem to have broken it as I couldn't click "next" after docking) and once just trying to dock quickly. I could probably do better, but I'm happy with my final time. The video is pretty boring, more of a proof-of-work than a piece of entertainment :D

(spoiler for final time, or just watch the video)

Spoiler

First try took 06:49.0 and the second took 04:30.2

Very nicely done. Importantly you are doing the retrograde "push" approach which I feel is the under-taught skill here.

For some unknown reason I had just assumed changing target rotation wasn't possible in my previous attempts! With that new knowledge I shall have to now see if I can go sub 4 minutes...

EDIT: And that brings us to 3m 30s. To be fair I used a few warping tricks to get there, including while planning nodes and burning.
