How can-I land this ... thing .

Recommended Posts

Okay , so , here is the problem : I designed a plane supposed to land on Duna , and come back , in my career save . But like the last time I tried that , nothing went well (that's not exactly true , the last time , I had to abort mission . This time is much better) So , I started de-orbiting , burning retrograde , and touched the ground nice and slowly . I was lucky , the terrain was flat . But it tipped over . I tried , again and again ... I tried at least 20 times , and I found the problem : the landing gears weren't touching the floor , because the Terrier engine I added was taller . So , I want to know : do I have any way to land this thing properly on Duna ? ABORTING IS NOT AN OPTION ! DUNA OR DEATH !!! Here is a picture .1591261866-screenshot42.png

It would be even better if someone agree to land this lander for me .

Hmm, if you have a quicksave in orbit smash Casgaud Kerman on the Terrier and hope that the TWR is still high... and that Casguad survives...

Thanks ! But wait , kerbals can do that ? What are they made of ? But still , I will try your idea .

Use the object thrower VERY CAREFULLY to destroy the terrier engine- saving before attempting this is highly recommended! Pause menu > show version info > cheats tab > object thrower, arm it and keep that window open but unpause the game. Right click will chuck a cube or sphere into the scene, with enough force (higher mass or velocity) it will break the Terrier engine but careful aim is needed to not break anything else either.

Or set radial out hold when landed which might be enough to keep it balanced if it has enough reaction wheels; pump fuel to the lowest tanks on the descent stage to make balancing a little bit easier.

Hey , it's cheating ! and I am not a cheater ! I want to do it legit . (even if your idea is great . If I have no choice , I will do this .)

So , I tried to go at high speed into the Terrier engine with casgaud . One time , he destroyed the entire rocket  , the other time he just disintegrated  . But anyway , I came up with a potential idea which will even make me save deltaV ! I kill my horizotal velocity , and I fall on the ground at around 50m/s should be sufficient to destroy the terrier . Then , I deploy my landing legs and it's done ! Wish me luck .

I DID IT !!!! It toof me forever to destroy only the terrier engine (and not half of he rocket) , and take off again to land right after .

Aaaah! Percussive rocket surgery. The good old Kerbal way!

P.S. Do you still have the save? I could give it a try.

Well , yes , but you would have to load the save 4 or 5 .

O.K. Thanks. I would only have needed the "4.sfs" or "5.sfs" files from that. The *.sfs files of KSP contain everything that is needed.

And, yes, I can manage a zero-zero landing (i.e. come down really slow) but the craft does not have enough magic torque (aka reaction wheels) to keep it upright on the slopes of Duna. (As gentle as the slopes may be...)

I returned to kerbin , got a bunch of science , so I can tell that this mission was a SUCCESS ! :D

And what did we learn?  When you're done building a lander, before building the rest of the rocket, test it out on the pad first.  :D   Grats
