Low Frame Rate

SO imma just cut right to it. I've been having performance issues with the game, but I'm not entirely sure what the specific cause it. Firstly, let me specify that I'm running on 1.8.1 because a lot of the mods I like have not updated yet. In case a mod list will help here it is:

Also my specs for my computer:

16GB of RAM

AMD A10-6800K 4.39GHZ

NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

Windows 10 64 Bit

 

When I first load up a launch my framerate is uuusually okay (around 20, 25+) but as each trip continues, the frame rate lowers. I just recently hit the moon for the first time in my career mode and by the time I got there the frame rate wasn't hitting above 7. And by the time I landed back on Kerbin, 5.

My current assumptions are that maybe my CPU can't keep up? Or that maybe the CPU and the GPU aren't the best match (AMD and Nvidia aren't a typical mix)? If anyone has any advice as to what could be causing the issue or ways I can improve frame rate, I'd really appreciate it! :D

Have you checked Task Manager to see if any non-KSP stuff is hogging CPU or GPU? Is either CPU or GPU pinned at 100%?

Is it much slower when engines are running? If yes, Real Plume might be the culprit.

Is it much slower close to the surface, compared to halfway to Mun? If yes, Scatterer and EVE are likely culprits. Maybe AVP.

If you f5 quicksave and immediately reload, does it get faster?

Consider the following steps:

  1. Make a complete copy of your current KSP folder. Do further tests from that folder to protect your current game.
  2. Delete several mods from the copy. I'll suggest Scatterer, EVE, and AVP since those are only visual mods that won't break your save.
  3. Start KSP from the copy.
  4. Play for a while. If you no longer have the problem, re-add mods one at a time until you find the problem mod. If you still have the problem, go back to #2 and remove some more mods.

I don't think it's real plume because I don't have this issue when I first launch and later in the mission when my framerate is low, thrusting or not thrusting has no effect on FR. I feel like it wouldn't be any kind of visual issue because the FR issue seems to scale with time, not graphics load. I'll try the quicksave/quickload idea though.

An issue like a memory leak related to one of the visual mods could grow worse over time. The problem could be elsewhere, I'm just thinking that getting rid of all the visual mods first is an easy way to check a group of mods at the same time. IMO it's easiest to test visual mods first since taking them away doesn't break saved games or saved craft files. You can test for a day or a week without visual mods, make progress with a saved game, then put the visual mods back without losing any progress.

KSP is constantly writing to log files; if they are on a slow drive KSP might get slower as the logs grow.

The problem could be mod-related but not a specific mod. Maybe your list of mods is too much for your PC. Removing mods could speed things up; it might not matter which mods.

Share your log file. Don't copy the file to this thread, but put it on a file sharing service and give us the link. Details in this other thread.
