Infernal Robotics or Breaking Ground DLC?

I want to make a crane to move and place bases (totally not copying a certain youtuber), and I want it to be able to extend and retract it's wheels (just make it closer or farther from the vehicle's structures, not extending and retracting like solar panels), but for that I need robotics, so my only options are either buying the DLC or getting the IR mod.

Which one is better? I don't know much about IR but BG adds a new cool suit, surface features and deployable science

As far as I’m aware, the two can co-exist together. Try IR first as it’s free, and if you don’t like it then try the DLC- which also adds more features to scan for science, new spacesuits and a few other things besides, but which also costs money.

Just to confuse you further - for that specific need there's a third option:

(Honestly, this mod is worth it for the construction docking ports alone.)

I've been asking myself the same question, but from the point of view of someone who's tried IR - and I'm generally content with it as long as I stay small, but I want a way to build chunkier structures and with IR everything gets a bit floppy over a certain size. If anyone knows if BG addresses that, I'd be interested.

Floppiness can be countered in part by using moar power and locking joints when not in motion. Robotic parts seldomly keep their assigned positions over time and will probably drift apart:

The breanking ground dlc gives you a lot more opptions than the infernal robotics, in addition to having a far better programming interface. I recommend it !!!!
