C-130  is set up with rocket assist, pretty common in Antarctica if they have to  use skies. 
Yes that plan took this to 11. 

The next shot reminds me on how many times the drop from the KSP runway to the sea has saved me

Granted, anything can fly with enough boosters.

But yeah there were also plans to use them in the Iran Hostage Crisis - both RATO/JATO for landing and taking off in a stadium and landing on a carrier for the final retrieval.

Bush pilots shrug and say "amateurs".

 

I remember one time doing a "performance takeoff" on a 757 test flight. That was a lot of fun. We went to the end of the runway and the pilot kept the brakes on while he ran the engines up to full thrust. This was a test flight, so the airplane was very light. After brake release all that thrust pushed us into our seats and we hit rotation speed almost immediately. ZOOM! We climbed out of there like you wouldn't believe.
