Confused on how contracts with the Sentinel work

I was playing KSP earlier today and I accepted a contract that tasked me with discovering 3 new comets with the telescope. The issue is I don't have a tier 3 tracking station to actually track and identify unknown objects so I am not entirely sure if this contract is possible. Also, for other contracts such as the ones that ask you to find asteroids threatening Kerbin, do I need to identify those as well? If anyone knows, I would appreciate if you could clear this up for me. Thanks.

It's been a long time since I did a spotting contract and I must admit that I don't recall the details. However, I've moved your thread to the Gameplay questions sub in hopes that someone else's recollection is fresher.

Those contract (both asteroids and comets) are completing themself over time once the telescope is in the correct orbit and has power.

So you don't need to do anything manually.

I think you do need to select the ‘Start Scanning’ option on the telescope.

Make sure your satellite has electric power.  Also, the satellite needs to be in radio contact with Kerbin.  The smaller early antennas only reach Kerbin when fairly close, so use a strong antenna.

Otherwise, you don’t need the level 3 Tracking Station for those contracts.  Just get the telescope to the specified orbit with a good antenna, and let it run.
