Canadarm is to commercial robot arms as SLS is to commercial launch vehicles.

The arm for Gateway has a contract cost of ~$1B.

Pretty sure Tesla could make one cheaper—even if they had to design and build their own motors. And design it to run autonomously. And mass produce them.

More the reason to just emulate Canadarm, skirt any later patents that may apply, or negotiate a reasonable license if absolutely necessary and get it done.  I can’t image any patents on Canadarm have any significant value left at this point.  Any original patents expired long ago.  Maybe there are some minor later subsystem patents involved but I doubt it somehow.  And those wouldn’t matter.  It is the general idea, with long expired patents, that matters, not the particulars that may have more recent live patents (idk if these even exist)

Now the Canadarm is cool in that it can basically walk around on the station from position to position. It also need to be very reliable as its very hard to fix in space.
not sure if Tesla makes their own robots or buys them? I guess is an combination.

Doesn't need to cost a billion $.
