My 2 cents on KSP 2 from Matt Lowne's first video

Recommended Posts

First of all, I'm so excited to finally see KSP 2 footage and obviously it's a blast with Matt Lowne (the commentaries man :joy:).

As a first impression, I feel like there is going to be some adjustments with the parts manager both in flight and the VAB, just some getting used to. Something however, that particularly bugged me (although I suppose this is a personal view) is the lack of brightness in the VAB especially when your color palette like Matt's dark blue is used. Maybe would it be possible to have a slider to increase the overall brightness around the rocket?

Next, up in space the apoapsis and periapsis information is below the nav ball. So when Matt's hovered over the periapsis after circularizing around Kerbin, the label that popped up was just "Kerbin". Maybe it would be  nice to have more information for the different points in the orbit and maneuver nodes, just a thought.

Then, the big concentric circles for sphere of influence in/out are pretty huge imo.

Like Matt correctly pointed out the mun looks gorgeous up high, but up close not as much, maybe parallax will come in handy in KSP2.

And the crafts floating on water probably needs some tuning lol.

Anyways that's it, just some small things. Excited for the 24th

Correct, however in another video, the surface textures far exceed modded KSP1 in my opinion. While ground scatter is not as frequent, I for one believe that there is a huge graphical improvement because of the redesigned, rather than updated celestial bodies. I could be wrong as I will likely have to use medium graphics.

agreed, water physics will need some TLC, but probably not necessary until they release robotic parts so you can make a ship to tow your sea dragon out to launch.

Who said robotic parts would be coming during EA?

More to the point, who said Intercept would prioritise things like robotics over core gameplay elements like water and aerodynamics?

What makes up your definition of a 'core gameplay element'?To be clear, I would rather have better water and aero before robotics, but having robotics can be very central to the gameplay, just as much as the way that craft move through air and water.

Basic physics? I mean, robotics is nice, but we can all live without it.

They have helipads....for rockets???  No, HELICOPTERS.  As we have now had our first RL helicopter on Mars, even more of a reason to have helicopters, which means robotic parts, in KSP2.  Not the highest priority - they are also missing the grabbing unit...all of which came in KSP1 DLCs - hence, they are implementing core KSP1 functionality first, then implementing KSP1 DLC content, then moving to all new content (colonies, lifesupport, orbital construction, interstellar, etc).

YES - robotic parts WILL come during EA...but are certainly not in this first EA milestone.  I predict the 2nd milestone (where they also stated they are introducing additional parts, I am guessing more than just science parts).

I figured those were for SpaceX-style “return to launch site” boosters. Helicopters would be cool, too, though. I guess I’ll have to get a new joystick with something to function as a collective.

The surface shape looks nice, but the way the surface textures are mapped over that surface shape makes it seem like someone is vigorously shaking a giant bowl of loose jello.

And you would be surprised if I told you that helicopters aren't the only imaginable thing that can take off and land vertically?

Funny you are so confident that robotics are coming, because you saw a feature that we all know was added for SpaceX style return boosters - and, failing that, jet-powered VTOLs. Yes, things do exist that take off and land vertically, that aren't helicopters. Until the team gives an update on their previous statement of robotics not coming to release, do not be so sure X is coming because you saw a rock, seen a cloud that looked barely like a duck, or made some other similar mundane observation that barely relates to X.
