I think it's for the really picture heavy threads, and so that people can post a lot without murdering a thread - I'm reluctant about opening known image heavy threads just because I'm impatient and my interwebz is garbage

It would only "be cool" if they fixed the problem that prevents spoiler tags from being opened on mobile browsers. Until then, they hopefully stay disabled.
