XF-3 Fighter: A prototype high altitude escort fighter. It is stable enough to be a joy to fly while remaining acrobatic enough to perform well.

I've tried moving the undercarriage further apart but that makes it worse. :(

I havn't yet added weapon pylons either as its unfinished.

Reminds me of a YF-23

Slap some missiles on this and it could be one.

Or something more heli like.

Those helicopters (especially the second one) look gorgeous! Good job! Is it as controllable as Meticulous Mitch's ones?

Rune. KIDI doesn't disappoint.

What have I missed?

Just look to the top of this page......

Reminds me of a YF-23

Guilty ;) Based almost exactly off it, though I tried to keep it very simple. It now has weapon pylons and functioning, reloadable missiles but they do reduce the handling.

Anyway as you havn't posted in ages i'm expecting a super awesome ship! :D

Pershonkey: You've got a whole collection of different ships there. :) One for each task!

Thanks! :) Your ships are some of the ones that inspired me to try this out, thank you for sharing them! They're quite amazing.

Cheers :D

Donlokimon with his XC305 was what got me into building warships. :) I don't think anything has yet matched that one for sheer awesomeness!!

Ok does anyone want to see me try to build an upsized version of the Fr-8A!!! (I'll need to use mods for this though)

Think i'll need: Novapunch for the 5m tanks and engines

B9 Aero for the large structure panels

and the zpinch (think that's what its called) huge fusion engines.

Hopefully i'll be able to keep the part count under 700

ok, i have a challenge for someone on this post, i know there is a challenge forum, but this ties in with this. kinda. i would like someone to try and make a ship from the Honor Harrington series of books by David Weber. ive tried several times, and failed each time. i would like to see a successful one.

you mean like the iconic hammerhead designs? Possible, but difficult to do me thinks....

yep, the hammer head design, and i do know it would be difficult. ive tried several times. it would always like to break by the "heads" when trying to launch or it would just look like a tube. no one wants a tube.

Not really something you could call "military", but it's quite unique in my opinion.

6z1w.png

A rather small weapon module for my space station, with 6 orbital bombs (actually designed to be missiles, but I'm dumb and forgot to add batteries/solar panels for the probe core), and 2 long range missiles. The bombs are capable of establishing and impact orbit or being fired at (theoretical) intruders.

Ive got a new battleship in the pipeline, Unlike my other battleships it will contain more subsytems

Like:

Self Destruct System

MWD (Micro Warp Drive (Actually its couple of mainsails which turn on when the brake button is pressed, Kinda Ironic)

Crew Ejection system

Engineering Room? (I placed all of the power generation, backup probe core and the self destruct explosive in a seald compartment in the core of the ship)

2 Huge Hardpoints (The new docking ports)

and the other standard stuff - SAS,RCS etc

Oh and Im basing the design off the Dominix from Eve Online

Just made this as a side project lol

The Heavy Destroyer Mk1

273 parts

350 something tons

4 re-loadable large torpedos

One of the best sensor systems found in the sector

Bad things

Torpedo should be fired when ship is NOT moving

You will see an explosion in the torpedo tube, THIS IS NORMAL

Limited armor near engines

Large amount of recoil from torpedos

Difficult to reload as they have to be pushed down the torpedo tubes

This ship is designed as heavy scouting ship or as a combat support ship for larger fleet battles.

I've been tracking this thread since before the great forum crash that happened earlier this year and I thought that it's about time I contributed.

Presenting the Chimera-class Modular Warship.

Hn7W3pX.jpg

The idea behind this ship is that armor will always lag behind munitions tech somewhat. So instead of designing ships with ever thicker armor, why not just have replaceable parts instead?

Chimera-class without the engine modules.

diOMi7Qh.jpg

Currently the modules equipped on the baseline model are a forward combat module with 2 SRB anti-ship missiles and 12 Sepratron-powered kinetic-kill torpedoes and a rear hangar module with room for 4 space fighters or with a few modifications, a massive amount of spare ammunition. Fully armed, this thing comes in at 572 parts which climbs to 692 parts with the engine modules added. And as a back-up propulsion system, 8 ion drives to be used in the event of engine malfunction or destruction.

The modular nature of the ship using Sr. Docking Ports as shown here.

ovwlWgfh.jpg

I've yet to test this baby out in actual space flight as I'm internally debating whether I should launch the modules separately and just assemble them in orbit or launch it all in one piece complete with its extremely large and heavy engine modules which I'm also thinking of redesigning.

Bannon, that ship looks great. It does looks quite heavy though, how much dV does it have with all the modules attached? This looks like a good thing to have to transport base supplies to a place like Laythe, assuming it can get there easily.

Bannon, I really like the idea of a modular ship, it looks like something Macey Dean would use in his series. I think you should sent up the ship in one piece minus the engine modules, which you should send up separately and dock together. Also, because the engines are so critical, I think they should be armor-plated too, instead of using the weak wing-plates.

Bannon is right about ammunition tech :

Here is : the new Stock 'Drill' Warhead :

vkbQl5k.jpg

if it's not deflected by hitting the armor at too much an angle, it should be able to do massive damage, even when launched at short range.

(tested two kind of propellers for it : a guided propeller, (propelled by a LVT45, it was the payload of a surface to space two stage space interception missile)

the second version was an unguided rocket, where the warhead was propelled by the standard SRB.

here's some results (a single impact against a Spiritwolf Vanguard class Battlecruiser hull):

liquid fueled guided missile :

total mass before final burn : 4.83 tons

Impact speed : around 120m/s, final acceleration was made less than 500m from the vanguard from a 15m/s approach. impact was on the large flat top section of the cruiser.

R3kABXsl.jpg

SRB propelled warhead (launched from a bomber) (around 4.5 tons before firing the SRB) launch distance : around 400 / 500m with an approach speed between 20 and 25m (impacted near the front of the battlecruiser) :

uDFM5Cpl.jpg

the warhead is only 6 parts - 1 NCS adapter, 1 small parachute, and 4 structural pylons.

to Bannon : it will be really hard to assemble correctly in orbit - you will need the exact docking angle each time :) (else, imagine where it could send you with misaligned engines :P)

Well you would hope he's got multiple docking ports for each module to attach to so it doesn't jiggle around under thrust, that should help... but large orbital assembly is still really hard

He does, each engine module is attached to the main module by a Sr, and to the hangar and missile silo by a normal one each.

Thanks for the input guys.

If my dV calculation is correct, it has 5032m/s of delta-v which I think isn't enough for a trip to laythe. Fully loaded the ship is around 287.32 tons with the engine modules alone accounting for 185.01 tons of the total mass. As such, I'm thinking of trimming down both the part count and mass first before I attempt any sort interplanetary missions with it. Though that is an interesting idea to put colony modules for delivery to laythe.

The bridge design was actually inspired by the bridge of the Spirit of Kerbin with a few alterations. And I probably will launch it that way because of how insanely heavy the engines are. As for the armor-plating, it was more of a part count influenced decision since full armor plating would have shot the part count up to probably around 800-850 parts. Though hopefully I could make the engines slim enough in my redesign to armor them properly.
