TAC Fuel Balancer-DISCONTINUED

I'm still working out how to handle liquid fuel and oxidizer together, but I am thinking along the lines of having sections for LF, Ox, and LF/Ox. That way, you can manage LF and Ox separately, or together under LF/Ox. I am not sure how to handle the case where you want to manage LF/Ox together, but they are out of sync -- i.e. some tanks do not have the right ratio of LF to Ox.

I`d cover your bases and give the decision to the user. Maybe an option in settings (or per ship ideally so you don`t have to keep resetting it) to stop when the first resource runs out (ratio perfect) or when the last resource runs out (max transfer) depending on if you want the destination to have the right ratios or be as full as possible. Balance would work as it does now and make the tanks weigh the same ignoring ratio of LF/Ox.

Hmm, might need three settings, transfer perfect ratio (will transfer at 1:1.1 ignoring destination ratio), make destination ratio correct (forces destination ratio to be 1:1.1 with two way transfer) or max transfer (transfers as much as it can ignoring ratio)

Or there could just be the ability to say "Make the destination 55% full of LF and Ox" with a couple of sliders...

Yes, an update would be nice. At lease to fix the weird node issue introduced in .20

Add some newer features in a later release. I'm going to avoid putting it on my ships until the node issue is resolved.

Nonetheless, thanks for the work that's been done so far and please don't think I'm an impatient teenager. Just letting you know there are people eagerly awaiting your updates.

We really need someone to update this plugin. This can't be forgotten.

The original author is still active (posted in this thread just a few days ago). The current version still works fine (just install it in the legacy folders, not in the new 0.20 format). Just wait patiently, and the next update might contain goodies (like partless functioning, or LF/O2-combined transfering).

Looks like I picked the wrong day to stop making parenthetical comments (no kidding)...

If you copy/paste the fuelbalancer module code from the fuelbalancer to mechjeb you don't have to add the fuel balancer part yourself, avoiding any node weirdness, and you instantly equip all your mechjeb enabled ships with fuel balancer functionality.

You can patch this mod yourself in 10 minutes if you can create a directory, move folders and edit a text file. Go to

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/30559-20-And-mods

and follow the directions.

There's no point to doing this, it works just fine installed in the legacy folders as-is, but if you want to, sure, you can...

There is a point.....Squad has stated that the legacy folders will be taken out of KSP, the only reason they left them there is to give people time to get mods update, bit of time to adjust. Don't recall the exact post/thread, but its in the support forum.

So, when that time comes, if this mod has been never been updated between now and then, then yes, there will be a point at that time. There's utterly no point in it right now, and probably never will be since it will likely be updated before then.

Why do tomorrow what can be done today =P

Why would you do it tomorrow either? As I noted earlier, the author is still active and is in the process of updating his library of mods. He'll get to this one soon, he's already working on new features he discussed a few posts back (maybe partless operation and LF/O2 combined transfers). Doing it today is the equivalent of, while driving the car to the junkyard for demolition, noting you're only a month away from your next scheduled oil change and deciding to get it done now. It doesn't need it now, and it's certainly not going to need it then.

  • 2 weeks later...

Good news! The TAC Fuel Balancer version 2.0 is coming soon!

New features:

  • Edit the fuel amount before launch!
  • Dump fuel!
  • No parts needed!
  • New screen icon for opening the GUI!
  • Scroll bars!

This is still very much a work in progress and there are a few known issues:

  • The windows initially open quite small. Note that they remember the last size so it is not an issue after the first time.
  • The GUI styling is somewhat inconsistent in some areas.

Completely uninstall the old version before installing this.

Download from https://www.dropbox.com/s/4pv79rkx87s1f1v/TacFuelBalancer_pre-2.0.a.zip

Please let me know if you tried it out, and whether you had any issues. Also send me suggestions for improvements.

Thanks!

Loving it so far. I haven't done any thorough testing but from fiddling with the Kerbal-X on the launchpad it seems great so far. I might suggest making the help window start wider (if possible) currently it starts with around 20 characters(maybe less) per line and is extremely long to drag it up to find the resize button.

Otherwise, Loving the gui:

Awesome. One suggestion/request, though I don't know if it's possible:

Quick forward/back and left/right buttons for trim tanks on planes and space planes (esp with FAR). They could take any available resource and transfer it to any available container that is in the direction you click.

Even harder/more awesome would be something that looked up the center of mass when you first click it and moved fuel in the direction that will keep it the same.

Hey... if you were ever looking for a challenge... it would be great if you could somehow pull in the CoL and CoM variables, then have the fuel flow maintain a balance that keeps the CoL 5% behind the CoM (or whatever user defined value is desired).

Great mod. Really useful.

Can we have an auto fuel balancer that will always adjust fuel distribution so that the CoM will be at a relative fixed position to the CoL. Thus the stability of aircrafts can be maintained during flight.

EDIT:

oops, i didn't update the thread and now i find out that i've just stated what TMS mentioned. :P

Love the mod! Makes refueling and balancing planes a breeze! Keep up the good work!

I have been testing out the new version you posted yesterday, and I believe I may have found a bug. Any craft that should be uncontrollable, such as unmanned craft, spent rocket stages with small amounts of fuel left, probes out of range of remotetech control, all appear still to be able to transfer fuel from one section of the ship to another.

Would you consider removing this feature during your development so that only controllable craft are capable of fuel transfer, or is it something that you have intentionally kept in?

I had not consider that yet. Will do.
