[0.23.5] Soviet Soyuz Rocketfamily v2.4 (13.May - Russian Tulip and more)

  • 2 weeks later...

Im new to this game and still grasping how to make nice looking rockets, and itd be greatly appreciated if one of you could explain how

1. You have the boosters tilted at a very little diagonal angle like that. Mine is always either straight to the side or straight down :(

2. I would also like to know how you have numerous fuel tanks all clipping and squished together on these rockets.

Thank you so much if you can get back to me on this soon :)

I can answer your questions.

1. To tilt things at small angles, hold shift while hitting the key to rotate the part you have selected. This turns it at 5 degree increments.

2. My Soyuz rocket has the tanks squished together like you mentioned. I did this by putting 4 BZ-52 Radial Attachment Points on top of the larger fuel tank in 4x radial symmetry, then using the technique above, rotating them slightly. Then, when I put the the tanks on top of them, they were squished together to create that tapered look seen here:

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the speedy response! I was un aware of the radial attachment point, AND the shift trick! Thanks! Im not on my main machine at the moment but once I get on it Ill make sure to try this out :)

IfI have any further questions Id be greatly thankful if you could answer those as well :)

  • 3 months later...

Thought Id revive this thread with my recently completed Soyuz :)

Its got enough DV to do a lunar flyby and back, dunno if landing is capable. Im pretty happy with it! Ill agree its a bit stubby, but any longer and the first and 2nd stage would not be powerful enough to lift it, but over all Im pleased (considering this is the 2nd rocket ive made after a 3 month break from KSP), especially with the fairing. (First time making a fairing)

The Strap on boosters burn for about 3 minutes, so they get you through the start of the gravity turn, and then the next 2 stages take care of the rest. The functional launch escape tower (which is triggered by an action group) automatically ejects itself along with the strap on boosters.

Anyway, enjoy! (these pictures are all accelerated staging)

On the launch pad.

Lift Off!

Strap ons break away. (along with the LES) Bonus points for Korolev Cross!

Block 1 stage kicks in.

Fairing decouple.

And Soyuz space craft detaches :) Id have to say the Soyuz craft is the weak point of my craft, its not very accurate, but it was the best I could fit into my fairing.

Looking good! I really need to release my latest version -- it's been on the back burner for a while.

I think the actual Soyuz craft inside the fairing is a bit small. That's really the only thing i would say. I really like the fairing though, I'd like to see a closer view of it.

Working on a proton :)

can easily get into orbit on the booster. Fairing holds the payload. :)

What do you guys think? Im still working on it.

mmh :) the proton has only 6 external tanks and engines :) (one trick i use for my protons, is a 'engine in an engine' :P basically, a lvt 30 with a lvt 45 clipped inside) - for most realistic looking rockets, clipping is usually needed :P

also, the second stage is as wide as the first stage core tank, and the proton is a 3 stage rocket (with an additional optional 4th stage with the block D or DM)

Wuh...? doh! the 8 external tank and engines was an honest mistake! I hit the symetry tool one too many times.

The 2nd stage tank is pretty much as wide as the first. its just 5 smaller tanks grouped instead of one big one. more fuel less weight. regarding the staging I never knew it was 3 stages :o how do you go about clipping engines right ontop of eachother??

Many bugs are to be expected though, as this is only a first draft produced in a night. ill be ironing out all the flaws in the next week.

Thanks for the feedback!

For the engines, it's simple : i place radially a cubic strut on the main fuel tank, and a lvt 30 under it. Then, i prepare another cubic strut with a lvt 45 on it (same configuration as the lvt 30) and simply pick the second cubic strut and snap it to the first, the engine will go with it. Then, it's just the matter of picking the lvt30's cubic strut (to get both cubic struts and engines) and attach it radially on the main fuel tank with symmetry. (And strut the engines afterwards, as the cubic struts are a little weak) - no need for fuel lines, the cubic struts will pump the fuel from the tanks into the engines :)

Anyway, for the third stage, it's much less high than the 2nd stage, and use a single engine (maybe with verniers, but not sure) and it doesn't have an open lattice.
