[0.19] Duna-LK1 (yes Duna!) - Soyuz inspired Duna return, CM, Lander and micro buggy!

Recommended Posts

Well, I have to stop being a lazy pilot and do things properly :) Muna LK2 was easy, on second try I did full mission...

Great to hear! It's a fun craft once you know how to use it. I'll update with a Muna-LK3 soon... currently working on Munbug V and refining my orbital stations.

Another fine design, Mulbin. Thanks!

Thanks! I have more ships in the pipeline, including Munbug VI, Horizon II, a shuttle and a new Muna-LK.... funny, can't remember the last time I had a chance to play any other games...

I finally cracked it!

After launch I got to 71km orbit round Kerbin, did my Duna transfer burn. I did 2 course corrections before Duna capture. After I got captured I adjusted my orbit to be equatorial and did my aerocapture and one round of aerobrakeing and established 50km circular orbit - with 20units of liquid fuel still left in my nuclear stage.

So I did my Duna landing burn with rest of the nuclear stage... I´ve landed using only 5 units of fuel in lander itself. Ascent back to orbit was pretty easy and lander was left with like 10 units of liquid fuel after docking.

Now I have just to get the CM home, I kinda have hard time believing, tha I can do it with just over a 100 units of liquid fuel.

I must say. . . I envy your creativity, imagination. . . and ingenuity. And since I see that you have no problem in making any ship look like it's been modded. . . may I request (if it's no too much for you), a very cool looking ship that can make it to any of the outer planets and get back? If you can add a lander or probe batch that would be kewl too. :D I can't wait to see more of your super-awesome designs.

Yes I can do that... when I have time! I used to have a ship called horizon One which could perform a Laythe return, I'll put a new one together soon!

today, there is a plan by a civilian millionaire with a nearly same mission, only thing different is a biger habitatmodule for teh flight. imagine to life in a soyuzcapsule for a week ...

It can't be much worse than two weeks in a Gemini capsule, and Borman and Lovell did just fine with that. Of course, it would be much worse if it was three people than two.

Your lander looks fantastic, great work! What's the mass of the entire LK-1? My current Duna vehicle comes in at 40 tons but my lander is much larger.

I took the liberty of boxing the rover up, hope you don't mind.

Edit: Just a note that this has only been tested on earth.

Edit2: Hello from duna! It can survive the fall IF you use the sepratrons to slow the fall. Just wait for the chutes to half deploy, then point yourself the right way and fire the sepratrons. You can either drop out of the box early or shake it off when you land, this thing rights itself no problem. Tested falling from 250km orbit, kept it upside down until the chutes deployed and was firing the sepratrons as it flailed all over the place, so it doesn't take much to save it.

HA! Brilliant. I'll bear this in mind for the next version.

I made a second version that I'm going to start using for planets with atmosphere: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/36828-Showcase-Useful-Probes%21?p=465701&viewfull=1#post465701

1. Added pressure, gravity, temperature sensors

2. Added a second box underneath housing a tiny fuel tank and engine, really just for decelerating enough to hit atmosphere so the host ship doesn't have to

Untested, but I should be trying it out soon enough
