What kind of creature are kerbals?

They're plant-men, for lack of a better term. Their cells have chlorophyll in them. How else do you think they survive such long flights with no food?

They have a rare virus that they live in symbiosis with called "Gamus Unfinishicus" which can turn LiquidFuel + Oxidizer + Screams -> Glucose + Carbon Dioxide (+ ATP).

I personally think of them as having human-like skin.

My theory is that in the Kerbal universe a grand creator picked his nose while he was working and absent-mindedly flicked a great big green bogey into space, it travelled past Kerbin spewing forth Godly bacteria which landed in Kerbin's seas, millions of years later Kerbals appeared! They think they came from cactus' but the reality is far greener.

My theory is that they are symbiotic fungi that live with algae for their sustenance. Combine this with water generation via rocket motor, and their lifespan is close to infinite.

See Lichens for more information.

Hmmm, idk about that
