Point of antennas and coms

Ok I have been playing this game for about four weeks and u have yet to discover what antennas or the "coms" that everyone mentions. Is it just for imaginary practice right now or is there an actually use for these

They don't do anything. They're just cosmetic. (yet)

they may serve a function in some distant future, but right now they're aesthetic. I think there's a mod that utilizes them as means of communications

In the stock game, they're only for decoration. But the RemoteTech mod gives them purpose, making unmanned probes usable only if they're able to communicate to a base station via satellite dish or antenna, with realistic signal delays. It's pretty fun.

I got no mods and i swear one of my wacky creations went somewhere around +200K away from Kerbin when i could no longer control it.

But when it got back closer to Kerbin i could control it once more. Extended an antenna and i didn't think about it anymore....

You probably ran out of electric charge. Did you have a power source? If you did and it was Solar, was Kerbin blocking the sun for you?

Sounds like your solar panels weren't facing the sun and you ran out of juice until your orbited long enough for them to face the sun again.

For all of my satellites, I will always just put communication stuff on them. Makes them look more fancy.

There is the RemoteTech mod (and the associated compatibility patch to make the stock parts work with it), where you need to have line of sight with comm equipment on unmanned craft in order to control them. It even has realistic lightspeed delays.
