[0.19] Station Kit Mark 2! Large single launch station (in a box!) on Jool V rocket.

Recommended Posts

NOTE - READ HOTKEYS BELOW BEFORE USING MY JOOL V ROCKET! (or it will wobble like crazy).

This is the next step in my development of deployable, single launch stations. I was able to lift a much larger payload this time using the Jool V rocket I developed for Munbug V.

The entire station is launched in one go... the catch is you need to put it together once in orbit! New tug provided (now with ASAS).

Hotkeys

1. HIT TWICE BEFORE LAUNCH - turns off gimble on 4 out of 5 mainsails to prevent wobbling.

2. Deploy Fuel module (once in place)

3. Deploy Power (once in place)

4. Deploy Comms (once in place)

Please note - I know the lights are the wrong way up in the picture... this is fixed on the craft file!

You are INSANE. I love it! Your work has had a great deal of influence on my rockets. I didn't know a lot of things were even possible within the frustrating and sometimes limiting build interface. However, you clearly demonstrate that a good understanding of how pieces interact is all you need to do pretty much anything the imagination can dream up. Fantastic, once again. I don't like to fly your rockets (pride and all), but I will take them apart to find out HOW THE HECK YOU DID THIS?!?!

So are you going to reuse the box?

I put the fairing back in place with the tug... no idea what to use the box for though! likely it will be for storage of parts.

That is easily the most beautiful and complex staging I have ever seen.

Thanks! The launch vessel was designed for my apollo clone, Munbug V

Just an update on my station mission..

To service the station I have designed a Jool IB rocket as the Jool V was a bit overkill for orbital launches! I use it to send modified Munbug CSMs up to restock RCS, Fuel and to transfer crew.

Here is the thread and download for the rocket - http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/29536-Jool-IB-Rocket-for-when-my-Jool-V-is-overkill!-%28now-30-more-on-fire-during-ascent%29

I see you have a new Muna/Duna spacecraft too.

yes, first test flight. It's my Muna-LK2, which I donated to Darth-Lazarus' project, who passed it on to you... and you made the front pod bigger! I've used a similar pattern to the modification you made with the nosecone, SAS and air intake. Working on a new launch vehicle as the Muna had waaaaaaay too much DV.

you SIr, have to much time, you know? :D

very nice station kit.

It's a bit sad... but I really must thank Squad for the money they have saved me. I haven't bought another computer game in 6 months. Seriously. I don't think I've ever had such a total game addiction as this... i literally don't play anything else!

Once campaign mode is implemented my wife won't see me anymore!

your poor wife ... but i know this problem. while i wasn'T able to paly aroudn with my rockets, i was thinking about it all the day. what can i improve? what can i change etc ... and i still havn't landed on minmus only Mun and Kerbin explored so far :D

I tried to play this with help from mechjeb and the instant it took off it started listing to the west (or left in you use the initial camera angle for reference). Anyway, it was an instant failure.

I don't use mechjeb (it's not a very efficient way to fly and removes the point of the game) so can't really help much with bugs from third party mods. Are you remembering to follow the launch procedure on the start of this thread? Possibly there are settings you can change in mechjeb for your launch angle... don't start turning until you are over 10k.

Best fix is to fly the rocket yourself instead of using an autopilot!... at least for the first part of the launch.

i managed to launch it to orbit, even if the navball is inverted (the 1st command module installed is upside down i think) you should click on 'control from here' on the shielded docking port at the top of the rocket to fix it for mechjeb :)

That's why it failed for me. I had this issue on a different ship once and didn't notice the color of the nav ball. Thanks.

Ahhhh... that explains it :) yeah the main pod is upside down during launch (so it is the right way up after construction)... so mechjeb must be trying to flip you over.

I managed (through cheating because I'm impatient and didn't want to spend another hour refueling the thing in LKO at 1 in the morning) to get the station into munar orbit. I'm trying to figure out how to remove the cover over the station parts. I figured out that stage 1 activates one of the escape pods and while it gets the cover off it destroys the dock on the end of the spire. Where do I click to decouple this thing?

yeah I can't figure out how to release the cover either. Some basic setup instructions would be nice!

All that aside it's still an insanely elegant rocket. I absolutely love it.

You have to break it open like a Terry's Chocolate Orange.

Or, clip the camera into the ass-end of the 'box' stage. At the very back, you'll see a long truss with a docking node. Decouple the node, then use RCS and the sheath should come right off.

A couple of other notes: If you're using RemoteTech, you'll have to add antennas to the tugboat. Look for the big cluster of cylindrical monotanks inside, where the ASAS unit is at the end. That's the tug. Also, it has no batteries so consider adding some.
