[Request]Noob-Proof SSTO

Recommended Posts

After YET ANOTHER crash landing, President John F. Kerman has finally given in and decided to ask for help form the rest of the Kerbal community. The Jedi Space Program needs a noob proof, idiot proof SSTO to use as a shuttle. It should have AT LEAST:

  1. A manned command pod
  2. A docking port
  3. Orbit and return capacity

The creator of the best ship will receive reputation, plus a chance to help with the upcoming Eve Orbital Probe mission! Also, bragging rights.

Thanks!

You might want to try the Skeeter and R-Type, both of which can make it to orbit without too much fuss. The Skeeters a bit easier to fly but the R-Type has much higher performance. Anyway you can find the links here:

Good luck! :)

My easiest one is probably the Crys:

No flameout, and even the basic version can carry 0-2 kerbals (it's probed). If you want VTOL, I also have the grasshopper, similar to cupkake's creations but with two jets. For perfect atmospheric handling, fuel or not, but a bit of a sluggish climb (you need to help with nukes to go over 10k), you might upgrade to the K-22, which for some weird reason I love and is as big a single-jet SSTO as I could make it. All of them you can find in my thread in my sig. Seriously, try the K-22 if only to buzz the tower a couple of times :P.

Rune. Having a single jet is the way to learn airhogging.

If you ever need to get 3 kerbals in orbit with SSTO take a look at my Orbital Shuttle . It's has a few features makes it easy to fly:

1. Take off by itself before end of runway, e.g., no need to manually pitch up in order to take-off. For many planes the manual pitch up is prone to scraping engines or flipping out of control.

2. Hands-off ascent. After takeoff, set pitch to ~30 degrees, turn on SAS, and it will ascent to 20KM after 10 minutes - you can leave it to itself and have some coffee.

3. Single jet engine. For SSTO spaceplanes with multiple jet engines, flaming out will happen first for one of the engines and creates asymmetric thrust, which is very difficult to recover. With one jet engine, flaming out causes no problem and is simply the signal for starting the rocket engines.

4. ~300m/s delta V left for orbital maneuvers and deorbiting, plus ~50 units of additional jet fuel for atmosphere flights during landing - plenty of buffer for piloting errors.

It's a very simple plane (35 parts) and thus is a good starting point to experiment with your own 3-Kerbal SSTO spaceplanes.

Sparrow from Zombiphylax...

Haha, I would disagree with the Sparrow being "noob-proof," but thanks for the recommendation!

Rune's Crys is pretty nice and friendly, with high air-intake tolerances, and a bit of fuel. SecondGuessing's Swift is pretty nice, but does require a bit of finesse (incredibly minimal though, was impressed with it). Cupcake's VTOL SSTO is fun to play around with, but does require understanding of how VTOLs work. If Jedi Master tried the Sparrow, and could get it into orbit, I'd recommend ssTALONps' ARX-3 series, it's pretty similar but with a bit more fuel. Haven't had a chance to try any of the 3-man designs yet.

Cheers. In that version she does get a little slidy at 1200m/s~, which can be a bit tough. The new variant, which I'm just taking some screenies of now and testing performance a bit more rigorously, that problem's been solved.

Figured I'd throw the link to my SSTO plane. This plane is extremely noob proof IMO. It has all the requirements you ask for and is capable of making it to orbit with enough fuel to rendezvous with any craft you might have near Kerbin.

Well, it handles great during take-off and landing, when most of SSTOs I know will flip and kill you. But fuel margins are tight, thats true.

I will release a VTOL version soon(and an economy version for a lot of extra fuel).

This one has a lot of extra fuel on it. It can get into a 122x122 orbit, dock, and reenter, land back at KSC like a glider.
