What did you do in KSP1 today?

It took me four spectacular landing failures on the Mun of full-up base components to figure out that 1/3 of the fuel for the lander engines is not connected. Doh.

But it sure made the scenery at the selected base site more interesting. :-)

Finished Phases 1, 2, and 3 of setting up my Minimus base in my "Better than Starting manned" mod save.

Phase 1 was delivering my gantry crane for use in setting up the base, here's a screenshot of testing it on Kerbin

kgGgCMX.png

Phase 2 was getting the initial base component there.....Had a slight issue with how close I landed them to the crane as you can see

Dao3QzE.png

Phase 3 was getting everything disconnected from the ship and hooked up. Found a few flaws in my current design (no lights, not enough docking ports, etc...) all of which I can fix in the future. Here's how my Minimus base looks currently.

oETkTf9.png

Phase 4a will be a redesign/testing stage on Kerbin of both the manned lander system, and probe transport/lander system for carrying more base components, plus testing the design here on kerbin.

Phase 4b will be the initial flight test/probe transport missions to minimus using a variety of payload sizes/weights

Phase 5 will be transport of more base components

Phase 6 will be transport of supplies

Phase 7 will be a manned mission to assemble the base and evaluate if more components will be necessary (possible return to Kerbin if supplies are being used too fast)

Phase 8 will be resupply transports, and more base components as necessary

Phase 9 will be final assembly of base components for the initial science studies (with a manned mission if the one in Phase 7 returned to Kerbin)

Phase 10 will be start of long term science studies at the base (looks life 5 years for one of the BTSM experiments), and multiple resupply missions as needed

Phase 11 and beyond are currently undetermined as they will depend on future science discoveries, and the success/failure of my Minimus Base. Though current plans do include the possible replication of Minimus base both on the Mun and a variation of it up in orbit. One final plan is to capture a type E asteroid get it into stable Kerbin SOI and construct a base using it as the anchoring base.

Installed some mods I really should have tried ages ago, namely Infernal Robotics, ActiveStruts, TweakScale, and Procedural Fairings. I made a quad-nuclear tugboat that fits in a small(ish) capsule, and then unfolds itself when it reaches space.

Reached Duna's SOI in my asteroid-ship. Did a correction for aerobraking then noticed a concerning shaking in the claw joint between hab module and asteroid, so opted to unclaw and move the hab module to a regular docking port connection, hopefully that will head off the destructive glitches. After that ran the usual science program, including asteroid sample collection

I've been testing this little critter on Minmus. I'm beginning to like ion engines. But,

is it a lander? is it a spaceplane? is it a rover?

m9x9pi.jpg

Here it is, roving/taxing towards the base (building still in progress)

2mzi176.jpg

And parked next to the Kethane-Karbonite miner for refueling

qodmhf.jpg

And this is the vehicle which delivered it to Minmus - and what happens when you mix part contracts with ambitious tanker rovers

rcv9dy.jpg

That thing worked... in a very Kerbal way. Which is to say, the S1 rocket was tricky to land because I had put the landing gear just below the 909s and I'm still trying to figure out how to deliver the rover to the surface - I have another base module with an identical rover on its way to RV with the rover and, hopefully, land on Minmus.

But here it is, before separation, refueling the base in orbit

zml2x3.jpg

And kerbals playing... err, checking the base

I installed Spaceplane Plus because I needed a cargo bay, and of course I immediately had to test the included cockpit and wings in an aerial survey mission of the northern polar region. Since I don't have any working supersonic designs yet, that took quite a while...

Afterwards I started the first two of my three Minmus communications satellites. One of them is already in its final orbit around Minmus, the other one will follow probably today.

Wait . . . you made an asteroid into a ship? Like, you found an asteroid, stuck a ship to it, and then took the ship, asteroid, and all straight to Duna?

Dude, you're crazy. I LOVE it. :D

Man, I was going to do this. I guess I'm just going to have to make a multi-asteroid orbital station instead...

I worked hard on updating my documentation for space planes, actually including new space plane examples into the doc and putting their craft files in the archive for easier access. And it took only 3 hours on Curse until it got actually reviewed and finally posted: KSP Space Plane Construction and Operation

Other than that I made 2 small VTOL's for a special coverage of VTOL's in the documentation maybe tomorrow. Here is one of them after performing the mandatory landing test on the heli pads.

Yup. Well, not straight. First I'd sent a tug out to rendezvous with the asteroid in solar orbit, and playing with manouvre nodes found I could adjust the Kerbin flyby into a gravity assist on to Duna, so I met it during said Kerbin flyby with a load of stuff to take along. (And also rotated the original crew out, only to kill them on landing back at Kerbin).

I posted it before, but this was the ship during its flight to Duna. As mentioned I had to move the Hilton module round since but it's all the same bits.

2 Bill is about 68 tons, so not the hugest thing but it looks the part. I've also got another similar-sized asteroid that I put on course for Eve in a similar fashion. I'm not sending anything with that though, because I'm making it an impactor.

"After that ran the usual science program, including asteroid sample collection"

Does that mean that there's science pt like "surface sample from astreoid near in space above Duna" and all others ?

Indeed, at least in .23.5 (and I've not heard of it changing in .24). Just like any experiment, asteroid samples give different results for different celestials and situations. Edited by cantab

I have been building a Docking + Refueling station in orbit around the moon. It's main components are a TKS and a Fueltank (Mainstructure) and in the sideway docks I have a Soyuz Capsule (to get back to Kerban) and a Munlander (for multiple visits to the Mun).

Not as fancy as most of the stuff I see hear, but I'm hoping its going to work.

I did a 1 way trip eve mission. Pretty much the mission consisted of 3 different vehicles. A 1 way eve lander, a small Gilly probe lander, and a small station.

Here are the pics

The crew on the station left in a 200kmx200km orbit will probably be exchanged out some time soon by a Kerbal transport ship. Ronkin and Erbas Kerman on the surface are probably stranded. I might send a return mission, but I don't know if I can do it. I hope you all liked the images and the mission.

I finally tested my new tiny Milkman replacement transport space plane called Leviathan with the payload it has primarely been designed for: a Rockodyne S3-14400 fuel tank to refuel space stations. In the image it's docked on the left side to the soon to be launched Duna station refilling all tanks and docked tugs.

ex_spt_leviathan_02.jpg

Made it back to KSC with a whopping 96 LF left in the tanks. Didn't have to steal from the big tank which was the goal for this plane. Yet it was some thrilling descend, even used up all the monoprop i had since it had to be as fuel efficient as possible.

More fun fitting stuff into fairings. Today I sent a large Kethane refinery to Minmus:

<iframe class="imgur-album" width="100%" height="550" frameborder="0" src="//imgur.com/a/zCBcO/embed"></iframe>

Conveniently left out of the image gallery is the refueling mission I had to send to Minmus orbit when I discovered there wasn't enough DV to land. I'm also not satisfied that the solar panels are clipping with the fuel lines after deploying the drilling arms. But overall I consider the mission a success.

225 parts in six stages, $406k.

...using the Explorer configuration of the Pelican SSTO.

After thats been done successfully, I further improved the tanker version of the spaceplane - now able to lift 7k units of fuel and appropriate oxydizer into LKO.

Preparing what will become the core of my Duna science station and fueling it up for the trip...
