  1. 1. Favorite location to land in KSP

Recommended Posts

To everyone out there who has set down on a planet or mun, I have a question for you-

What is the best location to land?

Where (the co-ordinates) is a good location that is large, flat, near something interesting, and ideal for a possible landing zone as possible?

I want to know because I am making a KSP series, and I want to know where you all would recommend a landing spot for future space chapters.

The story: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/28970-AAR-Development-A-Journey-to-space

Thanks in advance!

My favorite place to land is this location on Duna:

17° 3' 19" N

85° 27' 51" W

It's in the middle of a large crater and from what I remember ( I haven't been there in a while) near a hill but also some flat land and it's near an easter egg.

A spot on Duna on the hemisphere beneath Ike will yield quite a spectacular view.

I will see what I can do about that- Sounds great!

Your poll happened to leave off the two bodies I've landed on the most often: Gilly and Pol. (They're my primary fuel depots for Eve and Jool, respectively.)

Sorry- The poll only had ten spots, max.

My favorite place to land is this location on Duna:

Sounds Perfect! When I get to duna I will make sure to mark that location with a probe, for future landings.

Install Mapsat and find out for yourself, perhaps? That way it's like a real space mission.

Mapsat is... Glitchy, with all the other mods I have installed. If it updates for 19.1 I will download it.

I'm not suggesting that those should have been on the list, if "favorite" meant "most fun to go to/do stuff on". It's just that if you define your "favorite" as "the place you go to most often", it's funny that two of the five objects you're missing are the two most heavily trafficked bodies in my system. I hate really low-gravity landings in general, which'd rule those two out, and most of the other bodies have some other major drawback; Eeloo is pretty featureless, Laythe's water means you can't do much wandering once you're there (unless you use a boat or airship mod), Eve's too hard to get astronauts home afterwards, and Mun's too familiar.

So for me that leaves it as a toss-up between Dres (fun canyon) and Duna (easy to get to, lots of stuff to do/see), with Ike as a dark horse. (Low gravity plus rough terrain means you can get some impressive air on some places, without the Gilly/Minmus escape issues.) The thing is, I've only been to these once or twice each, while I've landed on Pol and Gilly almost a dozen times apiece. Hence my original comment.

What we really need is a cross between Duna and Laythe; something with Duna's low gravity (0.3g, versus Laythe's 0.8) and lack of oceans, but with an atmosphere that allows jet engines. Laythe's just too massive, with too much surface gravity and too few usable landmasses. Besides making things difficult in general, it means that plane designs for Laythe will be the same ones you made for Kerbin; I want a planet where I can fly planes that would simply never function on Kerbin.
