Is it possible to deplete an area of Kethane?

I mapped a small area (turns out after mapping most of the Mun, I was in one of the smallest Kethane areas available) and landed some drills. I got very little Kethane out of the ground and now I'm getting nothing. Is this normal?

Yes, I'd say it's possible to deplete an area of Kethane. If you have a scanner over the area, it will show the amount of Kethane in the ground at the site depleting as you mine. I've never completely drained a location, but I've heard of players who have completely mined out worlds.

I literally mined for a few minutes, time warped to try and fill some tanks and got a total of 517 Kethane...after that, nothing

Yes, it depletes very quickly actually. You can use the kethane debugger part to cheat and and recreate another kethane patch where you are, or you just have to make your miner mobile.

There are bigger and smaller patches of kethane, the scanner will say.

At least that's what it was like awhile ago. Not sure now. It would suck if it is just covered in little tiny kethane patches.
