Recommend scifi movies for people to watch

Primer.

I only know one person that's seen it, and that's because he's the one that told me about it.

It has that paradoxical sense of time travel to it, but it delves into its inherent problems and potentially universe-shattering side-effects.

No, it's not scientifically accurate, and a lot of the math is made up, but the accuracy isn't the point of the movie. I'd suggest watching it more than once if you enjoy it, just to understand it better.

Titan A.E. It's more 'Soft' Sci-fi but it has a good chunk of action and the 90's-early 00s animation style give it a vibe similar to treasure planet and Iron giant, the heyday of cartoons in my mind. Overall the movie was decent to good in reviews, but failed financially due to poor advertising. Bonus points for being on netflix now.

Forbidden Planet is an oldie but goodie. Dated, but if you watch it you will discover where Gene Roddenberry cribbed many of the details you see in Star Trek. And the plot is based on Shakespear's The Tempest.

LOL I watched "Primer" for about three times, and I think each time I watched it, I shaved off 25% of totally not understanding what's going on. So perhaps after my fourth viewing I will finally get it :D

My recommendations, not in any particular order, just off my head:

Gattaca (it's not about rockets, but he do gets to ride one in the end hehe)

Dark Star (the "precursor" to Alien--the writer of the original Alien movie made this awful movie before Alien and yeah it's hilarious, but it has a cult following, because it's pioneering in many aspects--just be prepared to laugh at the special fx)

Dune

Brazil

Bladerunner

Silent Running (the ending is so... what the hell LOL)

THX1138

Mad Max (1 and 2, I didn't like 3)

Solaris

Sunshine

will post more when I remember

Sunshine. Sun is dying, humanity sends Icarus expedition to restart it using a special bomb. It fails. Enter Icarus II. Movie happens. Was very cool.

Oblivion was good. Morgan Freeman. Morgan Freeman Morgan Freeman.

Serenity, of course. Nathan Filion and Jewel Staite, among other amazing actors. If you haven't seen this, DO IT NOW. But watch Firefly (ALL OF IT!) first. Space western.

The Matrix. Just the first one.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Technically a show, but it has a few movies. Very good. I particularly enjoyed the idea of prosthetic bodies (Mine sucks).

Stargate: Anything. Seriously, all the shows are good, the movies are generally just as good.

Independence Day. If you're not American this might not be on TV all summer long, so you may not have seen it. Very fun action sci-fi.

WALL-E. Pixar! Robots! Yay!

ummmm..... you know what? Screw it. I can't think of any other movies right now, but I can think of a lot of shows! TV is way better than movies these days.

In addition to the shows-with-movies above....

Farscape.

Cowboy Bebop.

Alphas.

Falling Skies.

Warehouse 13.

Paranormal (Only saw the first episode, but it looked like a lot of fun. Actually fairly science-y. Like a cross between X-Files and Warehouse 13)

Eureka.

Any of the Trek shows.

Actually, now that I think about it, basically anything SyFy has aired that isn't a "SyFy Original movie" (Red Faction: Origins seemed interesting, though) or a ghost-hunting show is pretty good. Alas, that doesn't leave much, thanks to my idiot friend and his ilk. They'd rather watch people play with puppets and night vision cameras than watch a decent story. Fools!

Anyway that's all I can think of right now.

It's far from the height of parody, but it's also quite far from bad. The form of humour it uses is rather specific at times, though, so it's very much a polarizing film.

If I were to recommend one, it'd be Solyaris. It's an old Soviet film, and it's beautiful. It doesn't rely on heavy action or spectacular special effects, but on an interesting story and beautiful scenes. It's about a psychologist who gets sent to a station orbiting the planet Solyaris. The cosmonauts on the station have been going insane, it seems, so he's there to figure out why. It's psychological and thematic Sci-Fi, and I love it because of that. Hollywood did a remake somewhat recently, but the original is infinitely superior, as the remake didn't seem to understand what the original was about.

I didn't like Spaceballs. I thought it was just... really bad humour... I never quite got why people consider it the height of parody.

That's okay. Spaceballs is what they call "Slapstick comedy". Basically, it's incredibly silly and irrational things put together to make humor. The best examples of this is "Ludicrous Speed" as a higher speed then light-speed and "combing the desert"...literally.

Hmmm, it would seem most of the films I intended to recommend have already been mentioned...

Ah, I know a good one. Stalker. It's based on the novel The Roadside Picnic by the Strugatski brothers. It is an old Soviet film. A lot of it is just slow scenes of landscapes and the group of three men moving through the abandoned countryside and dealing with 'the zone'. I find it a very difficult film to describe because you just have to see it to understand it. All I can say is that it is a very good film and definetly worth a watch if you're into slow, philosophical films.
