Flat Pack Parachutes

Thanks! Acceleration peaks at 8 gees. :) It can cut the drogue on main opening... I just didn't have the action groups set up for that when I tested it.

Awesome... When are you releasing it BECAUSE I WANT IT? :D

That LES tower is a NovaPunch part. :)

ROFL... I have SOOOOO many parts that I didn't even notice it. Found it and made a sweet one man pod setup. Thanks for that. Sometimes the sheer number of mod parts out there makes you miss some of the stuff that is right in from of your face.

I saw this thread yesterday and figured I would have a crack at it. Here's what I came up with. Hope you enjoy:

This is nice. Really nice. I used the Modular Girder Segment as well, it does fit the feel. I also used the octagonal strut for a LES designed for the 1-man command pod.

Yeah, once I realized I could take that octagonal strut with the chutes on it and push it down flush on the command module and top it off with a docking port, I was one happy puppy. I liked the fact that radial chutes were in the game but didn't like the fact that you really couldn't put but one on that command pod without blocking something. Now doing it this way you could probably fit a 3rd if you wanted to bad enough.... and all of them inside the nose of the command pod where they belong.

I would worry wether or not the connection strength of an octagonal strut was as strong as the connection strength of the parachute to the capsule.

Also, I've had Weird Physics torque problems with docking ports attached to small cubic struts, and somebody told me this also occurs with docking ports connected to octagonal struts.

This would be a great part to have, I've wished for its existence many times. However, I'm not sure if KSP can handle attachment nodes that can disappear: once the parachute fires anything above the parachute should fall off, or it wouldn't make any sense.

I had an mod with flat pack parachutes who could be put below escape towers or docking ports. Worked just like the regular ones except having an top attachment node.

It seems to hold up fine but I also tend to wait to open my chutes after the capsule has slowed down to sub sonic speeds. Makes for less G-forces and stress on equipment and kerbals in general. Also, I haven't noticed any odd torque forces... maybe it was a bug that was fixed in this last version?

Edit: I just thought of something.. Since I pushed the strut with the chutes down flush to the top of the command module, the docking port might actually be connected to the module directly. You'll notice in the video that the docking port is actually lower than it normally would be cause it's not using a node but it is surface attached instead.
