Ascending/Descending nodes when orbiting mun.

Recommended Posts

Im having problems targeting things while in munar orbit. IE.. I cant target anything. Not even my lander on the ground which makes my job much harder. Now.. the lander doesn't have a command module/probe so I guess that might be the reason why, but it'd still be nice to get a ascending/descending node so I can match up my plane with the target.

Not sure of what you mean, but if you want to change your plane relatively to a fixed point on the ground at a precise moment :

- from the point (IE a crater), continue to orbit roughly 90° (a 1/4 of munar orbit)

- when there, point your vessel to Zenith (+90° "blue or up" on the ADI ball) or Nadir (-90° "brown or down").

- engage your thrusters and adjust your inclination as you wish.

- the Mun rotates slowly (like the Moon), so after some amount of time, your orbital path will slip away from the target (the effect is much more dramatic on Kerbin/Earth).

Hope it helps

When I say nodes I mean like when your orbiting Kerbin and target the moon. You get ascending/descending nodes telling you how many degrees off level you are. What you just described to me is pretty much where the node would be to make your burn.

Well, that refered to both, the ability to target as well as the ability to put nodes in your flight path.

I am not sure, but I think probes that ran out of power also don´t have this problem (as they, as well, count as "without active command module")

Stuff on the ground won't have ascending/descending nodes, there's no orbit to compare yours with. All you can really do is adjust your orbit so that you pass over your target (see N_Molson's post) and then do a strong deorbit burn for a straight vertical descent.
