Mason's Space Art

Seeing as my original art thread got Kraken'd in April, I thought I'd remake it, and add to it. Now, I'm never going to get pictures as good as those by Rareden, but I think they're alright :P

(Forgive the low resolution of Eve, the image was initially smaller)

Jool:

(I decided to put that starfield to good use :P)

At this point, I'm still experimenting in GIMP, so hopefully the pictures will only get better :)

TELESCOPE SHOTS:

I know they don't count as art, but this is my picture thread, so... yeah.

New Picture: Jool. One of my best thus far, no doubt :)

Probably worth noting that the ship in the image won't make it to Jool without a transfer stage, as it's designed for station transfers (it's a mini RCS-powered shuttlepod).

I'm having to necro my own thread?! Ugh...

Anyway, the latest pictures are Red Giant and Starfield 3. I have to say, for my first serious attempt at sticking a band of galaxy across the background, I've done a very good job :D

I find that the stars and space backgrounds you've nailed. However the planets could be better; for example the gas giants have the striped effect on them, which if they were fully 3D would be warped to fit their point on the planet. So a "line" lower and higher up will be curved and not just straight across. But other than that and as i said everything else looks really good!

I never really thought of that, but now that you mention it, I went back to the latest one and did what I could with it:

What do you think?

I just applied a lens distortion and it already looks better, in my opinion. However, if there are alternative methods that don't involve any 3D modelling and texturing, then I'm open to suggestions, bearing in my I've used GIMP for all of these pictures.

I like them all! By the way, when is that story due?

1.Thanks :)

2.Soon-ish

I should probably say that I have started writing it up. This one is going to be a lot more text heavy in areas, with fewer pictures.

New picture, but it's no artwork this time.

Introducing... TELESCOPE SHOTS.

I know they don't count as art, but this is my picture thread, so... yeah. The picture shows Jupiter, plus all four Galilean moons, although only Io, Ganymede, and Callisto are visible, and Io is just barely in this shot (left edge of Jupiter). Europa is in front of Jupiter, so it wasn't visible, but it's there :)

Once more, this thread will rise from the depths of the forums, for I have pictures to post! *semi-evil laugh...?*

Well, no art this time, but that means the pictures are telescope shots, which are just as good in their own right, if not better in some ways. Firstly, there's another picture of Jupiter that more clearly shows 3 of its moons. This was taken a while ago. Secondly, there is the best picture of the Moon that I have taken thus far, captured just a little earlier tonight.

Enjoy the majesty that is our Solar System. Well, part of it at least. I do hope I get to gaze upon the other planets soon...

A Celestron Astromaster 130-EQ MD. Absolutely fantastic bit of kit, and it isn't too costly, if you don't consider £150 odd to be that bad. It's a Newtonian reflector, which I consider to be the cooler type of telescope, despite the refractor being the classic 'scope type.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
