Gratuitously Humongous Ships

Recommended Posts

I built this monster with pretty much half the modpacks linked in modpack index,so beware :-)

From what i remember: C-7, tuned SAS, SIDR, MMI Ions, Aerospike engine (assorted hardware), and Firelark - should be all of it, not sure

Stargazer Mk3 (still in testing, 'seems' to be working though) with attached double-airspike engine 'Sparrow' utility craft

Its a multiple stage heavy ship designed for long hauls pretty much anywhere, provided you have the time, patience and willpower to steer something as incredibly huge as this (well,it does get a tad bit shorter after deorbiting...)

Its not pretty, it might even get the job done, and i cant really test it because it grinds down my framerate like crazy. (old PC) Proper testing would take something close to 4 hours on my poor obsolete machine and i really dont have the patience for that >.<, so i only flown all the way through the atmosphere to try it (still took almost 15min for me), it had a slight drift of approx 3 degrees when i just left it running at full throttle with SAS online

Its my FIRST really complex ship, take a look, test it out (pretty please), and tell me what i did wrong :D

Misleading title. :/

it is?

P.S.: its unstable, tested it yesterday (took like forever),and from tests on a different ship i think the Firelarks are just plain unstable by themselves, ill need to completely redo the ascent stage and make it even bigger just to test it :\'(

Yeah I would say gratuitously gigantic would be the same height if not bigger than the vab.

  • 2 weeks later...

deleted everything and started over, decided to resurrect my thread again =P

needs pretty much all the mods as the first one (except ions),including KW pack now, not sure if i used the triple parachute,SIDR,wobbly rockets, tuned SAS,Aerospike engine, solar panels,C-7,Firelark

it still has some solar panels in the 3rd and 4th stage (4th acts as heavy lander) for fuel recharge, its, again, way too heavy and with too much redundancy for its own good, but i still like how it looks... its also much more compact and less FPS killing than the Stargazer

if you decide to try it,it 'works',you just have to fix the slight spin once you separate the first stage and do a course correction, during first stage its pretty much unsteerable, just kick in SAS and hope for the best =P

i dont know how to get around the issue, but atleast it doesnt go into nearly as bad of a spin as the Stargazer

I think this is the appropriate thread for my MunLander launcher. The first stage consists of 6 SRBs and 18 LFEs. Honestly, if I could figure out how to zoom out in the VAB it would be even bigger but as it is, it takes up all of the space I can see. It\'s made of completely stock parts aside from the massive 5 metre lander that sits atop of it.

Edit:

Actually I probably should have read beyond the topic title ;P

Perhaps you should consider learning how to deal with large ships using stock parts before going to modded parts as they add a new amount of variability among them that you need to account for. I know I am not personally a fan of the firelark modules because they\'re plain and simple too much power.

Can that get to the mun? To zoom out I think you hold shift while scrolling.

i probably should have,i know,its just i wanted the goodies =P

also, the latest craft probably has a bug,not sure if its a display bug or not, but it seems the 4 engines on 2nd stage drain fuel from the central tank first.... thats another problem i probably would avoid by actually learning the game first. i just never thought decouplers work as fuel conduits.... lame :(

Oh yes it gets to the Mun just fine, with plenty of fuel to spare (not even using any lander fuel either). Heck, I bet if there was another planet it could easily make it there. If I remove the super heavy lander from the top and just use stock parts to make a lander, it reaches the Mun far too easy. I figured out that I can zoom out by using +/- on the numpad, so now to make something even larger, because 18 LFEs just isn\'t enough.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
