Female Kerbal Possible Concept Art (they are supposedly androgynous but bear with me)

I do have to point out, there really is no reason for a female to shave her head to go to space. There has been plenty of females on the ISS with long hair. Not really sure where some got that idea from.

Long hair certainly wasn't a hindrance with Judy Resnik. :)

Let's just say if I saw this sitting in the corner of dark room, I'd burn the house down. I'm not saying you did a bad job, they look very good. :D But they just invoked my phobia of dolls and mannequins. I think they could be made a little less doll-like.

Thanks but it's not mine--it's by a female friend, who incidentally, saw the "preferred female Kerbal sketch" here, that more or less was liked by some KSP users, so she will try to make a version based on that sketch. So I hope that will stop the nightmares of purple-haired, horned, wide eyed, witches from Chibiland :D

TBH they look like a different species to me.

It was a template Uncle Mort, meaning, not final (we're all familiar with the term "alpha" now aren't we? :) ). Right now my friend is working on something much closer to the default Kerbal body form, and I hope that will also be subject to just evaluation by everyone's critical eye.

Well I kinda liked the anime eyes in Osay's render, however that was met with much vehemence and revulsion so I stand down on that *snicker*

I dislike anime eyes as well, but if you look at a FEMALE you'll notice their eyes aren't shaped the same way as a MALE. So some distinction would be nice.

Yeah and seriously, shaved head is a no-no. Karen Nyberg (who is aboard ISS right now) has some gorgeous, long, flowing, blonde hair just floating around up there!

Yes it is, it's not about the length, it's about that masculine point in the middle of the forehead.

You can`t say `this is a male characteristic and that characteristic defines being female". Is this lady masculine? Is this man feminine? Cut the ladies hair and make her green and she would look very much like a kerbal.

A widows peak is neither male nor female, it mostly shows with shorter hair. Not every male has them nor every female.

The kerbals are unrealistic in showing every kerbal with one when only some men and women have them. It does not define them as male or female simply because of that. I maintain that the current kerbals are androgynous enough at this stage in development. My apologies if I have been harsh in this thread but I do not respond well to people who use the word sexist a lot then say things like "This is why I consider guys to be jerks most of the time >.>"

>.> indeed.

To get back on topic, I do not think the images in the OP are good to use as a template for further design of a female kerbal because the amount of key features you would have to discard leaves you with something so generic as to be of no help.

You would have to shorten the hair, remove the horns, change the skin to green, age the subject (reduce head size, shrink eyes, lengthen body and limbs), and put them in a spacesuit so you can`t see their panties.

This would leave you with essentially the current model with softer features, as has already been said.

I have no problem with making female characters. There is no reason not to include them unless kerbals are meant to have no sex in which case I would support a model which mixes the two sketches in pencil shown previously. I do have a real problem with trying to move this game in the direction of world of warcraft or anime.

My opinion is that there are more important things to spend coding time on like resources, career, physics, 64bit, GPU physics etc. At this stage in development surface features like hair, eyes and so forth are very much not on the list of important stuff to do.

I think this thread should be in the fan works section if we are meant to be appreciating the art instead of generally discussing...

Ok, I just told her she can mess with the hair LOL thanks

And John, she will be working on a render based on that sketch that everyone seems to like (i.e. the two kerbals, side by side, one on the right more slender and rounded...the one used in the Pioneer 10 Plaque parody. And furthermore, a mod already viewed this thread and didn't decide to make that move, so I guess it stays here, unless another mod deems it needs to be moved.

I'll admit, I like them better than ventriloquist dummies. And I bleedin' hate ventriloquist dummies. Thanks for that bit of childhood trauma, Rod Serling! :D

So please tell me, what kind of hair would a female KSP player want as a "default" female Kerbal hair...now is your chance Brabbit! :)

Honestly if I was in space I probably would pony tail my hair. I also feel like it is generic enough for most females not to have an issue with it. Course we could go all out and do some crazy hair style that would put Japanese hair stylists to shame o.o ... if that is even possible rofl.

Doesn't have to be made by the developers.

And I don't think it is even close to someone starting the process of creating this, so why shoot it down so readily?

I'm all for it, to be honest, if this existed I would have all female crews all the time.

Sorry, are you serious? You think these are cute? I feel a little bit sick...

(opinion)

Thanks for the opinion. :)

Actually you have no idea what sort of data I'm accumulating about behavior patterns of some users in this forum are exhibiting, based on responses to the subject at hand. :D That alone is quite rich in insights and trends--a marketing specialist would have a field day if he/she had his hands on data like this :D As Mr. Spock would say, while processing that data, "...fascinating." :D

Speaking for myself... I pretty much keep my hair short. Less than shoulder length, long bangs sort of pushed out of the way, and I guess you could call it shaggy. So basically pretty much my avatar.

That was my personal default choice...noted Sapphire!

Now that I would like to see. I can play anime games until the cows come home and I like KSP because it has none of that. Your friend seems to draw very well, but the anime style... (no words). If they can do something in the KSP styling I could see them coming up with something very interesting indeed. I like the way kerbals look as though they have table tennis balls for eyes and they are made from green putty.

Those girls are indeed nightmarish purple-haired, horned, wide eyed, witches from Chibiland...

Again apologies to you personally if I have been harsh in your thread.

Ya ... but I wanted to go with a more generic hair style that most females like. You see more females with long hair then you do short hair. However, I do like short hair as well. I just don't want to go by what "I" think, and rather go by what most would probably enjoy and be ok with.

LOL I actually liked your responses--they are very objective and definite. Compare your words to the "blank-wall-no-I-don't-like-that" responses that have accumulated in the past few pages--you actually offer good insights and (I hate to say the word) you play good devil's advocate--other's have attempted, but sort of failed. Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

Cool. Fair enough about not moving the thread. Thanks for saying it`s a pioneer parody, it was driving me nuts trying to figure out why it was so familiar.

LOL it's not "elaborate" as you think--you can detect it (and of all people, yes you already detected it) yourself, without being that clever. :D

Hehe, and there's always the behind the scenes folks that you have to be careful of. For instance, it is generally considered true that forum participants of any game are only a small portion of those who actually play.

In my case, I market to a male dominated profession (HVAC Contractors) which may mean some radio spots on "guy radio" (read "sports radio"), but we also must be careful as most of our customers happen to also be in full business partnership with their wives who are likely the ones running the show behind the scenes on quickbooks and such. We take it too far, and we alienate those VIPs!
