[Showcase] Non Asparagus Launch Vehicles

Recommended Posts

This is my light orbital launch vehicle the PHOENIX 1 manned and unmanned variants. It can carry a 3 man spacecraft or a small to medium sized satellite into LKO.

This is my heavy orbital launch vehicle the PHOENIX HEAVY. It can carry up to 25 tons into LKO or take a manned lander to the Mun.

By the way it isn't asparagus, it just has 8 boosters surrounding the core which have no fuel lines.

I loaded up my semi-asparagus launcher from a subassembly to launch a payload, launched it, realized that fuel lines disappeared, the rocket flew better WITHOUT asparagus.

The cause:

The 4 boosters had more efficient mainsails(the new ones from 0.20), the center had the original mainsail which sucked up all of the delta-v with its low ISP. Plus 4 engines is better than 1. Before it would get me with a small payload to around 30km, now 50 with much bigger payload.

Not sure if this qualifies, but I like to put fuel tanks on top of my SRBs...

This is a(n untested) stockalike mock-up of my proven Archer-2502 launch vehicle. The Archer series use SRB-mounted liquid fuel tanks to keep the core stage topped off during ascent.

Oh my god... Dude, chuck that into the open source construction techniques thread, it's amazing!

I know I'm changing the subject a bit, but I was wondering something about the Soyuz rocket.

the first stage, is it only the four engines that runs, or the middle one too? if the middle one runs too, is it connected (for fuel) to the other four?

The core stage on the Soyuz has much more fuel than the boosters, which allows it to burn form twice as long without the need of fuel crossfeed.

Too bad this topic died !

Here is my Stock Launcher, fairly capable, without any asparagus configuration of course :

This was in 0.90 if I remember well, would perform way better with the new model atmosphere :)

Her little sister has been updated to 1.0.4 :

Also in video, when it was 0.90 too I think, and when it was possible to design that custom payload, made of maaaaany parts... Now, my PC dies at 400 parts xD

Well now it revived ;) Pretty sure the wobbly crafts were fixed by joints etc. :) But still nice craft.

Re-reviving this thread with my massive SLS booster. This thing can haul three kerbodyne tanks to orbit easily enough, the only problem is the unwieldy nature of the stack. Total payload is roughly 240 tons to a 120km orbit. In this test it took 162 tons to a 1000km circular orbit.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
