How to use craft.txt from Spaceport on a mac

Recommended Posts

I have been trained to be a bit of a nuffer  by apple as i have an imac. I have just tried to chance the name of the file by removing the .txt. when i copy and paste into the VAB the file is still shown as a txt file(a picture of a page with the corner turned over and lines representing text). How does one convert these files into a Mac KSP friendly .craft file(a picture of a blank page with the corner turned over). The VAB cant seem to see the craft.txt file even when it has the .txt removed as it still is shown as a .txt file(a picture of a page with the corner turned over and lines representing text)

Thanks in advance

Nuffer mac user

It just needs to be whatever.craft on any system. never .txt somewhere along the way some piece of software stuck a txt on it, but before you load it into KSP just make sure it has a .craft ending and nothing else.

A side note. On modern operating systems (except in some cases on windows) the type of a file is totally independent of it's file extension.

On a mac, which is is a unix based operating system the name can contain any number of dots, or none at all. It's still going to be a text file inside because of the MIME type header which you cant see.

I removed the .txt in my download folder and then copied into the VAB folder of one of my saves but still is shown as a .txt file(a picture of a page with the corner turned over and lines representing text)and does not show up when I am in the VAB?

Thanks as I like learning. Can I change this 'MIME type header' and if so how?

Frash23 mulbin put Munbug VII on the space port because for one reason, I am such a Nuffer and was struggling to use file sharing sites, but thank you for your offer.

It's possible, but not easy, and there is no good reason for you to do it. (besides crashing things, embedding viruses in emails, and setting off alarms lol)

Ha ha ok thanks. Being a nuffer I might just stay away from doing that.

Mulbin says on the Munbug thread.

"I'm afraid it already is in the correct format... it's your mac that is having the problem. At present when you download it your mac is changing the filename from "munbugvii.craft" to "munbugvii.craft.txt" or possibly "munbugvii.txt" - it's trying to be clever, it thinks "that looks like a text file, i'd better be helpful and rename it so it works in text programs!"

not sure why he would say its "hard to convert"... it doesn't need any sort of converting, just renaming.

you need to rename it to .craft, getting rid of the .txt bit. Change the name to munbugvii.craft and see if that works... if not try the next stage below!

If the name already just says "munbugvii.craft" and it's still not working then the problem is probably that your mac is set to hide file extensions... in this case Basically the file is really called "munbugvii.craft.txt" but all your mac is letting you see is "munbugvii.craft" and it's hiding the bit that says.txt on the end.

To sort this you just need to tell your mac to stop hiding file extensions from you! Instructions here -

http://www.fileinfo.com/help/mac_show_extensions

Once you've done this should be no problem changing filenames to .craft"

"thank you Mulbin following that link worked a treat!"

Bumping an old thread here (and I SHOULD know the answer but ...)

I generally don't bother with downloading others' .craft files so I've never run into this before. However, I just downloaded Wayfare's updated Munshine series of lifters but I'm hitting this brick wall. In my case, my Mac is NOT hiding the file extensions, it's simply confuzzled about the file TYPE. It thinks the .craft files are UNIX executables and there's no easy way to change it that I can find. I tried setting .craft files to always open with TextEdit but that didn't fix the problem. KSP still doesn't "see" the downloaded .craft files when I put them into the proper folders.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

EDITED TO AD: Gah, I'm a moron. After exiting my save I decided to try the .craft files on a separate save. This time I tried them in my .22 save with a fully-complete tech tree. Turns out the smallest one of these boosters uses the Large Probe Core and I haven't unlocked that node of the tree yet in the first save I tried these on.

Nothing to see here, folks. Move along, move along ...

After looking for the answer myself i managed to find a simple fix i believe works. Instead of changing the name of the file you should go onto "get info" on the file and change the name there. it seems to be working very well for me so far. Sorry for the late answer I am a new user and i do not know if late answers of this sort are frowned upon. I hope this helps:)!
