Having more than 2 attachments in symmetry mode

Just bought the game off Steam and having some problems with attaching modules. I would like to add more than 2 attachments to my center piece but I am not sure how to do it. I click the symmetry mode button and it doesn't seem to change anything. What am I doing wrong. Version is 20.2.186 if it helps.

Try to use the button left of the symmetry button.

Are you in the VAB? If so, change the symmetry before picking up a part to place. If you are in the SPH, the only options are 1x and 2x symmetries.

...and if in the VAB, you can either click the symmetry button, OR hit X (shift X to go backwards) to switch symmetry numbers. Very useful when you keep having your symmetry switched to x2 when you accidentally mouse over your previously placed tanks .
