Kethane and How to use it

Recommended Posts

Well, I was searching KSP Forums today and I've found out a tutorial about Kethane. I just clicked the link on which redirected to the mod's page, and I saw that it was a great mod for me to install. But here's a question before I download it: what do I do with it, how do I use it's parts?

the Kethane mod adds a minable resource called "Kethane" to the game. you can scan planets for Kethane, mine the kethane, then convert the Kethane into either liquid fuel, oxidizer, or monopropellant. The mod has parts in three categories, propulsion, utility, and science. the propulsion part include various sizes of tanks to store the kethane in, as well as a rocket powered by raw kethane. the Utility parts include a large extraction drill and a small extraction drill used for taking the kethane from the ground, two converters (large and small) that wil convert your kethane to other resources at a certain efficiency, and a generator that will generate power from raw kethane. the science parts include 2 radars (large and small) that can be used to scan a planets surface for kethane deposites at a certain altitude. all parts can be used the same way you use any part in the game mid-flight; right click on the part and select the desired function.

I use the Kethane MOD to refuel my ships on other planets. For example, I have a kethane operation on the MUN. I mine and convert kethane into large amounts of fuel on the surface. I launch that fuel and transfer it to my 'gas station' in orbit. I now can refuel my landers, construction vehicles, and whatever else in orbit around the MUN.

Is it possible to - set up a mining camp on the Mün, and have it transfer "wireless" to a probe in an orbit around Kerbin?

With the Lazor Mod, which allows the transfer of resources that way, yes. Not with just the kethane mode itself.

Bold statements vs underlined. What information are you missing? You have the tutorial, you have the mod's page, and you know it's a great mod for you. What do you not understand?

I have absolutely no idea how to get to the kethane deposits (Kethane is the only mod installed on my Ksp) How do I get to some numerical coordinate when all I can do it look at the planet and the navball?

Follow my logic here... your satellite that scans the deposit is straight above the deposit... it has a coordinate it gives you when it scans it... you can mouseover on the map to look at the coordinate... once you get something else in orbit, match the orbit your scanner has, wait until you're at the same location, then descend. Magically your scanner even gives you the longitude/latitude numbers.

If in doubt, mount a scanner on your descent vehicle... wait until it 'pings' as over a deposit, descend.

Here's the link. It didn't explain much that I could understand.

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/35664-Kethane-Usage-and-Proper-Fuel-Routing

Fuel lines, how they function.

Ideal setup, explanation on how to ideally set up a refinery.

Routing is explained and how to test your setup.

I can't spoonfeed you information if you can't understand a simple tutorial. Probably not the mod for you.

Oh man I feel bad. *sigh*

Look. Build a small satellite. add a scanner to it. send it to the mun or minmus is probably better. enter a polar orbit. right click on the scanner, show map and start scanning. time warp 100x and leave it for about 15 minutes. by then you should have a good idea of the deposit layout. land the satellite on one of the deposits

Build another larger rocket with a kethane tank, a drill, at least two large solar panels and a converter. the drill has to be close to the ground to reach the surface. Land it near your scanner, start drilling and converting into whatever you need. That's the basics. When you get good, you can start experimenting with different setups and even with the Kerbal Attachment System.

It's not that difficult is it?

I could understand the transfer part but I am asking if someone could tell me how to setup a refinery, a basic one.

That's not really a beginner's thread for kethane. It's meant more for specifically how to design kethane miners, and the issues that trip up a lot of people. I don't even know that much about the scanners really, but the official kethane thread has a ton of posts about that if you want to know more.

And I think there is some way to find out your current coordinates above a planet's surface without using any other mods. F3 maybe, or alt-F12; if you know the location of a deposit, then you just have to look straight down on the planet when you are directly over that location and land there on the next orbit. It's easiest though, to just put a scanner on your lander, even if you don't use it for scanning, you can at least see the deposits and your current location.

since you are not asking a complete question, we can not give you a complete answer. based on what you DID ask, here is the answer:

Basic refinery:

Power (solar panels, tons of RTG, something)

Empty tank of the fuel type you want

Med/Heavy converter

Kethane Tank

Kethane drill (optional, if you get the kethane from a different ship)

there. a basic refinery.

By the way, is kethane mining really worth it? Let's say you're mining on the Mun. Do you get more fuel from the kethane you mined than the fuel you used up to land on and take off from the Mun?
