0.21 Feature List

Google or forum search doesn't give me any decent results. Maybe I'm searching wrong, but that's beside the point as I mostly wanted to offer a place to gather all this info in a clearly labeled topic in General Discussion.

Nothing is confirmed to be in 0.21 until 0.21 is released :)

At best we have hint's and what is planned but nothing is 100% confirmed.

Harv on the breaking of saves.

While we've been able to maintain compatibility over the last couple of updates, unfortunately this one isn't such a case. The new crew management system changed the format for saving crews (to something much better), and the new format isn't compatible with the old version. Instead of risking breaking things even more by writing some sort of upgrade logic, we decided it was better to just break compatiblity and start fresh.

This also gives us a nice opportunity to do other tweaks that we can't usually do, exactly because they tend to break saves. Because we're going to break it anyway, we can push in a lot of other little tweaks that wouldn't have gone in otherwise, so hopefully they will make it worthwhile.

You can always manually edit your save so it matches the new format, but that can cause other issues, so we really don't recommend it.

Stay tuned for a dev blog soon about new things that we got to add because we decided to break compatiblity. ;)

Cheers

Craft files are still compatible. The only thing that needed to break was save compatibility.

Your creations should be safe... Assuming of course it's not using mods that might themselves break, or something else... compatiblity is never simple.

In any case I've been using the same stock ships here as always for testing, and they didn't give us any trouble so far.

Cheers

Harvester has promised a dev blog entry about some of the features that have been added with this update due to the save-game breaking. I would expect that before the end of next week.

Hmmmm... I guess I'm going to have to do a "good bye" in "style [explosions]" for the old saves I have. :D

Achievements by a different name?

I could be talking out my ass, but I seem to recall it being architecture to support career mode rather than achievements. Although for sandbox it would likely provide that sort of functionality.

That makes me want to start a thread titled, "Possible Kerbal Achievements"

AFAIK there will be new way flight ends, new ASAS algorithm, crew management, progress tracking and new VAB/SPH... and some minor tweaks. Maybe I forgot something...

And NO SAVE BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY!

New SAS system is the only thing that has been confirmed so far.
No. We have the new building textures as well.

I thought it would be here by now. They should make a point of releasing new patches on a Friday afternoon I think.

NONE of these are confirmed! Any number of these aforementioned features might be pulled because the devs discover they are hopelessly broken, quite possibly right at the last moment before release. They are being worked on and it is intended and hoped that they will appear, but "intended" and "hoped" are not the same as "promised", still less are they the same as "confirmed".

@ O.P.: Nothing has been confirmed. As KasperVid said a lot higher up, confirmation only happens at the point of release. What you see in the release announcement is the first solid confirmation anybody gets.

EDIT: A thought: It is unlikely, but it has been known in the industry for broken features to be removed by an emergency patch. So even the release notes can't be read as confirmation, 'cos that lovely feature you were hoping for might be snatched away from your grasping paws before you have barely had time to discover for yourself how broken it was!

You can always keep using the old update, though, if you want to use the broken feature. :P

I agree the chances are small, but they are never zero, and it is worth applying a bit of hope-dampening to a thread to reduce the punters' disappointment in the event something should go wrong. Things *DO* go wrong! I have no particular reason to believe the mentioned features will drop out, but it is always safest to avoid getting too excited about things at this early stage.

As for videos: it is very easy to create a video of that sort without extensive testing. How well does it work while docking - do the two ship go insane and smash each other to bits at the first bump? How well does it work when the player switches away from and back to a ship with SAS - does the ship go totally insane and fall apart? If a large impulse such as imbalanced engines occurs, does the SAS cause the game to crash? That sort of bug can be seriously game-breaking while at the same time slipping through the superficial testing evidenced by the video. I would assume and expect C7 *DID* that sort of test! All I am saying is that a video is no *PROOF* he did, and doesn't count as irrefutable confirmation that a feature will make the release.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
