Just discovered this game, VERY itchy to buy, but...

From what I am reading, there is expecting to be a major patch released soon? It sounds like there are some issues with older saves as well. If I go and buy this game today I know I'll put 50+ hours in the matter of a week, so I wanted to check in here on the forums first... I tried catching up on some of the dev blogs and posts in the development sub-forum. I haven't really seen anything hinting at "how soon" this new update is going to be released.

Does anyone here have a better idea than me? I'd love to wait and buy the game after a nice big update, but oh man I am so itching to play it... I played the demo for 2+ hours and I am fully captivated. Cannot wait to see where this game goes.

Thanks for any info!!

I'd say go ahead and buy it. Then you start building rockets and things to start learning what works and what doesn't. But don't try building an empire in space until the update is released. But all that you learn from now till then will be useful.

The update is currently unknown when it's released, but no matter when you download, you will get the upgrade for free! So buy it already and have fun :D

Edit: And yeah, when the new update kicks in, you won't be able to transfer the saves from the current version to the new one, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun in the meanwhile. The update should be coming in within two weeks for sure :P

Yes, a big update is due, and it WILL be a save-breaker. However, while saves will break, spacecraft will not. You can simply copy them over, and they'll work.

Most of the curve is learning things anyway, so you may as well get stuck in and have fun now.

Squad doesn't release on Fridays or weekends, simply because they don't work in the weekends and couldn't fix major bugs.

So it's either today or next week.

As far as I know they are currently at the point where they are trying to find smaller bugs, which seems they are close to a release.

But it then again it could take an other 2 weeks.

Since the game is still in alpha development, there will always be the chance that the next update will break savegames. However, if you buy from the KSP store rather than Steam then it is possible to retain old versions, and when an update comes along you can copy the latest version and update the copy.

As other people have said, it is quite common for people to junk old savegames and start over with new strategies, using new parts and game mechanics. I rarely bother to keep savegames after updates as I am usually too busy trying out the new stuff.

A warning: while you can carry old ships over, this may not apply if they depend on third-party mods as those quite often break or need changing when updates come out.

Do buy this: if you keep waiting for "the next update" then you will be waiting forevger, and you will miss the Steam sale currently on.

Thanks guys! Is the best place to buy from Steam? I frequently play my games there, so I figure that would be the best choice.

Great to hear that spaceships carry over -- if I do get it before the patch, then I will just play around with that and see what works. However, crossing my fingers for a quick release.

Thanks!!

Agree on all points. If the save converter happens, all the better, but I prefer a fresh start to be honest. I always find that I build 'monuments' that I don't play with if I carry a save on for too long. Perhaps I'll end all flights except my flags, and keep them as testament to the brave kerbals that went before :)

ksp's biggest bug, Danny. hope it never gets fixed.

Just buy and play.

At first, it was really fun to try to go to the mun and I experimented a lot : all my craft from this savegame were junk ;)

Now I can start a new game, and within 10 minutes I have a ship that can go to mun, land and come back...

So play it my friend, have fun with all the parts, and don't care about your savegame : restarting a new game with experience will only be fun :)

Buy.

Experiment, play. There's a learning curve. I wouldn't start any MAJOR interplanetary colonization missions before the update, but probes, Mun landers.... so much to DO, even after you've mastered building, launching, orbiting, maneuvering...

Buy, Buy, Buy.

Buy it now, I would say.

I'm quietly expecting the game to update this Monday, for the anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, as happened last year. It's in experimental phase, and has been a while, so I reckon it's pretty much done by now.

Anyhow, I doubt you'll have long to wait for an update.

However, as always with Squad, it's coming Soonâ„¢.

Thanks for any info!!

This game is in developement and will be for some time to come.

I started wit 0.15 about a year ago and had 8 or so updates until now - and every time started with a fresh installation.

The big thing behind KSP is "know-how". When you know how things work, they can be done again very quick. But you need the experience of a few hundred launches, landings, mishaps etc. to overcome this learing-by-doing. In my oppinion it makes no sense to wait for an update, because all wat you cen learn now you can start trough with the new update immediately on a higer level. New parts as also on the horizon, therefore even existing spacecraft designs probably will be not more usefull because thy get less efficent maybe.

Yes, yes, yes, and... Yes.

Buy the game.

Don't do anything like building a station or moonbase until the update comes out; it entered experimental phase a while ago and hopefully will be out soon.

Also, a word of advice: Don't ask for release dates. I know the post doesn't ask for them explicitly, but Squad doesn't like giving away release dates.
