How to build a ladder around 90 degrees

Recommended Posts

I used to find it funny how every time a kerbal had to Eva from my lander can around my large dimension fuel can onto a planet he would rag doll over the side usually hitting his head on the landing gear, lights, and/or solar panel on the way down. Then I would climb back up.

This was all fun and games until I recently couldn't get back in over the 90 degree lip on Tylo due to gravity.

How does everybody else do it?

I usually stick on an adapter when I encounter this problem, that way you can mount a ladder at an angle. Game seems to like that better.

I would like to know if that's a wholly necessary thing to do. I too have encountered problems with the 90-degree lip; first time I tried to do a Mun rescue mission, I had Seeley piloting to go rescue Jeb, Bob and Bill and was going to get him out for a group photo before sending everybody home. He fell off the damn ladder; ultimately had to jetpack him back up to the CM. Thank goodness that was a place with low gravity...had that been someplace like Tylo or Eve, he would've been killed...

I've been toying with a part model that has double levels and two ladders. I am able to climb up and down no problem at this point, on Kerbin anyways, but not at first... At first it was just like stock ladders, fall off all the time, possibly roll off the second level, and splat on the ground. I kept playing with it till it worked, and the trick was to angle the top of the ladders in a little, or kick the bottom out, whichever way you want to look at it.

I've been wanting to try it with vanilla ladders, but have yet to get around to it. Maybe worth a try?

Here's how I did it for my Moho base, not that it was really necessary with low gravity, but it works.

Oscar-B tank mounted sideways with a cubicstrut then just the handlebar/miniladder bits stuck on at angles and ladder below.

You've got to use a few ladder pieces, limiting the angle to about 30 degrees.

Sometimes it can be helpful to overlap them a bit, but not too much or your kerbal will get confused.
