A Game Ruining Moment (Help! D:)

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I never use the quicksave function... I know, not very smart at all, but I never actually knew it existed until very recently.

I'm not very good at KSP, so having a lander on Mun, and five satellites in orbit is a HUGE achievement and I really had a nice little set-up... for a while.

I had recently launched my fifth satellite, and was planning on moving a Kerbal from the lander can to the little chair on top of the satellite just for fun. I had EVA'd before, but this time I got really disoriented and accidentally launched my smartest Kerbal into deep space. I could have just let him go, it wasn't that important but I wanted to get it right, so I googled the issue, and realized I could reload quicksaves. Right before the moment I sent my Kerbal into EVA, an autosave reminder had briefly flashed by the top right of my screen, so I reloaded quicksave...

Right back to the first ship I ever tried to launch. All my ship builds are still there, but none of the Kerbals I hired exist, and none of the landers or probes were on the Mun or in orbit. ;.;

This took quite a while, and it just kind of took the wind out of my sails to the point where I'm planning on not continuing the game. I can't even manage to get the same ships into orbit. I'm very bad at KSP.

So basically, does anyone know how to fix this? Supposedly you can reload autosaves by quitting and reloading but it brings me back to the quicksave at the start of my save. Help would be appreciated.

I don't believe there is a fix for that particular bit of misfortune, but I hope it doesn't kill all your enthusiasm for the game. It is very hard to get good at KSP, but that makes it all the more rewarding when you do finally achieve whatever your current goal may be. When I was learning the game I found it quite easy to get ships to Mun, but I crashed on every landing attempt for 4 straight days and began to wonder if I ever would figure it out. But I persisted, and now Mun landings are so easy that I test my new deep-space designs by landing them on Mun. :D Try something else for a while. Build a car and drive it around KSC, or something like that. Then go back to rockets when you're less frustrated.

A couple of lost rockets is no biggie in the scheme of things. For all of us playing version 0.20, we lost everything with the release of 0.21. For me that included bases on Mun and Minmus, space stations around each, as well as a couple of space stations around Kerbin. Given that each of those took several launches to assemble, recreating them is going to be a lengthy business. But has it put me off the game, of course not. I just view it as an opportunity to make small improvements on the original designs as well as giving me reasons for launching several missions.

Before trying to recreate your multiple satellite system, why not just create a 'Test' account and practise putting things in to orbit, as well as adjusting the orbit as necessary. Once you become comfortable doing that, launching several satellites in to orbit will become a piece of cake. Same goes with Mun landings. Start off with a simple lander with which to practise and as you become confident with your landings, you can move on to bigger things or maybe start learning how to land on a specific spot, essential if you ever want to put a base together.

A moment of silence for the brave Kerbalnauts who lost their lives in this horrendous catastrophe. May they shelter in the palm of the Creator's hand, and may the last embrace of the mother welcome them home.

Now, onto the next mission!

Ah curses. Well that's alright, by lose my enthusiasm for the game: I say that, but I'll probably be back after a month or so. It's like how I quit Dark Souls for about 4 months when running up against the brick wall that is Ornstein and Smough. It's disheartening, but eventually I'll suck it up and try again. Now, how does one change Unanswered to Answered? :P

I think it's important to remember that a game isn't a game unless it's fun; people tend to get far too attached to some sense of accomplishment or whatever, then manage to convince themselves that said accomplishments are somehow essential to the game and a pre-requisite to further enjoyment, which will inevitably lead to disappointment.

Such thinking is a subtle sign of a gaming addiction, which most of us have to one degree or another... :blush:

It's similar to a drug addiction really. One begins with occasional recreational use, all in good fun, but before long they come to view the drug as absolutely essential to daily life. They no longer enjoy the stimulation it offers, but feel that they require it in order to carry on, somehow forgetting that life was perfectly stimulating prior to drug use, and can be perfectly stimulating post-addiction, if only they allow it to be.

If the thought of starting a new space program is unappealing, then either there are fundamental flaws in your way of thinking that can be easily reversed, or the game just isn't for you. Either way, take a break to sort it out. =)

Personally, I use every update as an excuse to wipe everything out and start again... it's like de-cluttering a workspace; sometimes you have to kick yourself in the butt to do it, but in the end it's deeply liberating!
