That's really cool I was just looking at the actual Apollo version of this not to long ago. Shame he didn't have a seperate lander/CM module. I did an Apollo remake down to the T and it was one of the funnest things I've done in the game.

does that rocket really have enough delta V to land and take off and get back to Kerbin?

Yep - the lander is a pretty classic design and it is really capable due to its tiny mass and the LV-909's incredible efficiency.

Building on what Wayfare said, I'm pretty sure the upper 2 stages have enough deltaV to reach LKO by themselves.

Seconded. This is the exact build for my current Munar I and Minmus I landers. I usually shed the transfer rocket while landing, so I end up with a TON of fuel to get back to Kerbin.

Except now I have some solar panels for...you know...torque.

I guess when I tried it I did not use the most optimal path, I tend to just throw more dV at my trips
