Engine sound

KSP is my favorite game despite fact that i'm rather lousy at math, and rocket science need loot of math but even i knew that sound in space should not propagate, because there is a vacuum, so why we hear the sound at high altitude?

In my opinion above 30 Km engine shouldn't be heard.

Personally I think there is too little sound, I could almost hit mute and not note the difference if it wasnt for the occasional kerbalish screams from Chatterer with reverb set on.

Lets be honest here, it aint a simulator because there is no way in hell my last trip to the Mun would of worked in real life... basically slapped a large lorry on the tip of a rocket and sent it to the Mun, reality would of sent the over powered rocket through the axle of the truck 0.0024 secs after hitting launch...

... and am I glad it aint too realistic, or we would all be stuck making trashcans with engines only.

I would love some driving noises when I am driving rovers around, some hiss noises from the RCS, some muffled rock tumbling noises and muffled footsteps when I am on the Mun and ... and ... and ...and ...more noise please.

Purists can always hit mute.

In high school I had a very cool physics teacher, he was able to explain everything even to the greatest dummy like my:)

I once talked to him about Star Trek, he told me that it was very cool series, but it has shortcomings. For example, the sounds of firing a phaser in space, it should not be because in space there is no medium in which to be able propagate the sound.

It depends, in external view sounds should fading away as atmospheric pressure goes down, so it will no sounds in vacuum.

From other hands in IVA it's a lot of background noises (e.g. vent fan) and You can clearly hear engines noise and excessive vibrations propagated trough ship hull... of course You would hardly hear anything when use smaller engines like ant, orange radial engine but still it would be quite a noise if You put lot of them.

There's a limit to how far you can/should push realism in a computer game. Triggering our senses helps us immerse ourselves into the experience, which is why having rocket engine sounds in space is sensible.

If you were to push for realism then there shouldn't be any third person view, we should have to place cameras for external view and swap between them instead of just rotating the view with our controls. Nor should there be any background music. And for unmanned crafts we'd need RemoteTech mod to be stock, with signal delays, preprogrammed actions and signal relaying. As much as I love realism in computer games I feel that there's a line between enjoyable realism and too much.

Personally I agree with those who would wish for more sound, but I feel that it's not that high on the list of additions/improvements that I'd want.

Well, I think that no sound in vacuum aren't really stuff making KSP an hardcore simulator, there is difference between realism and plausibility (simplified but feeling real enough).

3rd person view should be available even on "high realism" because it's just fun to watch ;).

It's also fun to hear sounds in space. Think of it this way: You're sitting at mission control. Piping through your speakers are the sounds of the cockpit of your spacecraft. On your view screen, you see all the statistics of the flight of your ship, with a nav ball showing your current trajectory, and a simulated image of the actual craft compiled from all this information and technical schematics.

Seems realistic to me.
