minimum cost burn from Tylo to Pol or Bop.

Recommended Posts

I'm doing an grand tour without refueling, I have done everything including Tylo. Pol, pob and Eeloo is left and I have limited fuel.

I did not go do deep into Tylo gravity well but left the upper stage at 2000 km hoping this would reduce the problem, I only need 280m/s to escape Tylo however this takes me far outside even Pol, how do I do this burn to minimize cost, Tylo escape is probably far cheaper than Pol capture.

After Pol I planned of going into Jool orbit, intercept Bop then it crosses my orbital plane and exit in a way who put my orbital plane more in match with Eeloo's plane.

I believe this happens because of the single gravity body simulation in KSP. If you orbit counter clock wise and your escape vector lines up with the prograde vetor of Tylo your alltitude above Jool will be relatively high compared to Tylo at the point of escape . At the same time your velocity will be higher aswell.

The solution is to point the escape vector like 45-90 degrees away from the prograde vector of Tylo.

According to http://ksp.olex.biz/ optimal for Tylo to Bop is 249m/s, Tylo to Pol is 261m/s. Likely have to add a bit for the inclination changes though. As with any optimal transfer window you can't do much else than wait for the perfect moment to do your transit.

The problem is that any burn who escape Tylo at least from high atitude will take you in an orbit outside Pol, Laythe to Val has the same issue, however here you can do an burn who take your orbit just a bit outside Val and outside Laythe orbit, this is not an optimal burn but reduces the amount of braking you have to do to get an capture.

Just adjust at what point you do your burn and you can pick what kind of orbit you'll end up with. I've done a Laythe + vall mission myself and had no issues whatsoever. Compare it with escaping Mün's SOI, you can either get out into solar orbit or you can adjust your burn so you're sent into aerobreaking altitude over Kerbin.

Set a 260m/s burn on your Tylo orbit, then click and drag the manouver node back and forth (whole way around preferrably) on your orbit to see how your escape trajectory (and resulting orbit around Jool) changes. Then add what little extra you need to hit your desired target at the necessary point.
