0.7.3-0.11 Height Challenge

Recommended Posts

This goes pretty straightforward. Just build a rocket in the first version of KSP and try to get as high as you can. This is based upon the very first concept of HarvestR for KSP, where it was a 2D flash game where you just get as high or fast as possible, (and for the purposes of this challenge, the lowest version number, so 0.7.3 is cooler than 0.8 or 0.11).

EXTRA CHALLENGE: Get to Orbit! It took a while in the old version for people to figure out that since Kearth (old name for Kerbin) is a sphere, you could orbit it. Of course, it's hard as there was no map screen at all. Keep in mind also that there is no fuel crossfeed between tanks.

DOWNLOAD 0.7.3

My highest was 111091 m. My highest speed was 260.1 m/s KSP didn't have screenshots yet, so we have to go by the honours system unless there's another way.

Also, you explode at high gees. [EDIT] ist was the boosters overheating, nevermind. To repel this, you can use the radial decouplers on the side of a booster as heat sinks

Listen to this for Harvestpunk KSP music (Harvestpunk is what the game would have been like if only HarvestR worked on KSP)

Scoring System:

Your Score In Height and your score in Speed will be added, then multiplied by :

x1=11

x2=10 (x2.5 if it's 0.10.1)

x3=9 x4=8, and

x6=0.7.3

where x is the base score, the polynomial is the multiplier, and the answer is the version number (it won't work mathematically, don't even try.)

You could use your computers built in Screenie system to take screens. Also, can you open this to v 10.1 for us Mac users.

I have a mac; I just tried this, and it works to run KSP 0.7.3 in Wine. Of course, there are some graphics glitches; not sure how much of that is due to Wine and how much is due to the early version of KSP.

Here's what I've got so far.

Wasn't that far from reaching orbit, with better piloting it would have been even closer. Sadly I've lost the design and have to start the R&D process over.

Height:

Speed: (Note: this is on the way up, no way was I waiting through ~20 minutes of 1x speed to get a slightly faster descending speed)

So, 227904 combined height+speed, times 6 for using 0.073, is a score of: 1,367,424

Screenshots captured with the print-screen button pasted into Paint.NET and cropped. If you're feeling snazzy, alt+printscreen will copy only the current window.

2.EDIT:

Just beat that score. Not sure how high I'll end up (and don't feel like waiting to find out right now), so I'll post that tomorrow.

New design has the delta-V for orbit.

I've reached orbit in 0.10.1! Not nearly circular, very inclined, so it will take a while to descend to Pe to get highest speed. I'll leave it running all day, and deploy the parachute in case they de-orbit into the atmosphere for some reason (I don't foresee that problem)

This is as big an achievement as my first Mun Landing! Getting into orbit with no Map, Timewarp.
